Serious gamer?

Saturday, November 29, 2003 by paxx | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've noticed lately that some very interesting options are coming out for big gamers. Some people will buy one game per month, or more. That cuts you down by $60+ each month.
I don't know if such services are available in the US or elsewhere in the World, but in Canada, we have services such as Games Mania (http://www.gamesmania.com), where you can rent PC games online. You can rent them one game at a time, for 3 days, for about 6$, or better, buy an unlimited 15$/month subscription. Any game, as long as you want.  Granted, they don't have every single game out there, but they do have a nice selection anyway.  Unfortunately, that service is for Canadian residents only, but do such services exist in the US or elsewhere too?

As for console gaming, I also noticed that my video renting store also has a similar fare. For 30$/month, you can rent any game for as long as you want. Seriously, what a bargain for the serious gamers!

(Note that the above prices are in Canadian currency. For the US equivalent, cut the price by about 35%.)

PC games are not rented that I know of in Florida at least, because people just burn a copy so they don't do it. But Game station games reant on a regular basis from BlockCuster and others for sure.

On the site I'm talking about, you can't burn a copy. You don't actually download the setup files. I don't exactly know how it works, but you have to install the required software first, then you can download the games through that software. It's encrypted or something I don't know. But indeed, if you rent the games for 3 days, it just won't work after that. It's very interesting.

But IP, I know you can rent games individually at Block Busters and such, but what I find interesting is the subscription packages. All the games you want for as long as you want for 30$ CA (some $20 US), now that's amasing!

It's a pity that we don't have such services.

But, nevermind.. Counter-strike is free!!!

For console gaming, there are sites where you can have games mailed to you to rent at a monthly fee. It's pretty much the console gaming equivalent to the popular DVD rental service NetFlix.

Check out www.gamefly.com, same thing as Paxx described, only for the US. http://www.gamefly.com

I signed up for it, but then cancelled my subscription, they are in California, I am in NJ. It took 5 days for my game to get here, then 5 days to go back before they sent my next game which will take 5 more days to get here. If you live close to them, it's a GREAT service, when I cancelled my subscription, they asked me why and said I'm not the only person like that and that they are working on a better solution for East Coast customers. Other than the shipping they are a great service, I would recommend it.

I've seen that at Best Buy, and although it does look interesting, I don't feel right renting games, because I like knowing that they'll be mine forever.

Leo

There is a DVD club that rents movies which I find kind of odd considering DVD burners and all.. We used to have a couple of places here where you could walk in and rent software, game sand the like but they were shut down within 6 months of opening operations. I'll have to do a search at the Sp Times news paper and see if I can find links to the stories for some ack ground on it...
