Windows 11 (KB5022913) Moments 2 Update

Start Button

Wednesday, March 1, 2023 by SimplexDesigns | Discussion: WindowBlinds

Just wanted to give other skinners a heads up. As of Moments Update 2. The start button can no longer be larger than 48x48. It will be cut off as of this update. Along with the changes the notification tray arrow is no longer skinnable. Its just a generic arrow now to match the rest of the icon hover effects. So keep this in mind when creating themes for windows 11 support.

For me, I will be downgrading back to windows 10 since this taskbar keeps getting worse each update...

This is a perfect time to plug that its time for a taskbar replacement app Stardock. Do something like what retrobar does but bake it into your own app that ties in with start11/Windowblinds 11 cause these limitations suck. Maybe its time for objectbar to make a comeback... Just saying.

Can't say I'm not surprised William, I too will be going to Windows 10, and not worry bout Windows 11, until some changes are made on Start 11, and WindowBlinds 11.....

Not sure, but this may fix some of the issues. Neil's working on a fix that'll come hopefully this week.

I already had that installed. Never had any of the issues everyone was having. Just the new limitations. Back on windows 10 as we speak.

Moment 2 should be changed to "Moment 2...The Regrettably Unforgettable Moment".

To think, it's a non-security, voluntary, manual update.

I believe it has been mentioned before that Windows 11 will move to 48x48 pixel Start button. So, its up to us to go on with that restriction or revert to old Windows. For me, I am still on Windows 10 as my main system. But, I need to have Windows 11 system on VM to test thing out. For Support and for Windowblinds testing. Need to cover as many user as possible. I remember designing Winamp skin back in the old days, we only have very limited space to make those control buttons, slider to work and look nice.

Yeah I have windows 11 installed on a vm now on for testing. These new limitations are not good changes. The new taskbar has been a complete disaster since its creation. It still does not have toolbars support and most likely will never. Having pinned apps separate from open task is a must for me. I never used the windows 7 pinned taskbar feature because of this.

Moments 2 is a bit of a dud for sure. I was never a big fan of the Moments update idea to begin with.

I suppose Microsoft wanted to break up all the updates instead of doing one big update on Windows 11's final year. It wouldn't make since to do one huge update for Windows 11 only to release Windows 12 beta a month later.

I am still going to use Windows 11. Hopefully Windows 12 goes better though.

Actually, it was to shrink their change log.

They arent really shrinking the 23h2 update (aka 4 moments). The only thing being shrunk is the amount of time features are tested in the dev channel.

Actually, I was paraphrasing this, but you're correct in that it will also shrink testing time.

"Microsoft initially planned to release one yearly Windows 11 feature update to keep everything straightforward. Unfortunately, the company scrapped those plans to opt for cumulative-like releases every few months. That means Windows 11 gets new capabilities faster (three or four months) but with slimmer changelogs." - Taras Buria - https://www.neowin.net/reviews/here-are-the-new-features-in-windows-11-moment-2-update/

Its very apparent that there is less testing time. Notepad tabs rolled out bugged on stable systems not in dev channels. I tried it out and it bugged out. You could pull tabs out of the window but doing so cause it to lag out. There were some other bugs I saw posted about it on reddit.

They need to spend more time testing the updates/feature more before rolling them out. This is why I hated the windows 10 update model. Windows 11's is like 10x worse in my eyes. Not one time did I have any issues under windows 8.1, that OS was rock solid with no bugs or forced updates. At least the good part about Windows 10 now is that its only getting security updates now. So I can easily sit on this version for quite some time without issues. I did block the windows 11 upgrade through the group policy editor just in case it tried to install.

Agree with all you wrote.

I have W10 on my desktop, W10 on my laptop. W11 is what I thought it would be...a big disappointment and even more limitations on customization.

*edit: I've paused updates for 2 weeks. Hopefully by then Neil's team will have found a way to circumvent this situation.

As a Dev I can say it is a nightmare.  We need consistently in the OS not changes every five minutes.

The old model of a major new version of Windows every few years was far better.

They should have just stuck with Windows 7. No new OS's after that!

While I agree, I also fear they'd have broken Windows 7 in many of the ways that Windows 10/11 is broken now...

That being said, some system to selectively integrate strictly optional new features into it (eg. file copy dialog with speed graph, if you prefer that) instead of the regular forced breakage we have now would have been great.
