Copyright Question

Saturday, November 22, 2003 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I recently uploaded 3 objectdock icons.

But really all i did was take the programs icon and converted it to a .png file.

Did i break some sort of copyright?

I have noticed other program icons in the OD listings so I was just wondering.

Technically yes, but software developers are generally okay with people using and modifying their icons just as long as the modified version is used solely to point to and launch the original application. You should never assume this is the case though, and don't be surprised if the original author of the icon someday asks for your version to be removed from distribution.

OK thank you. It was just a command and conquer icon for OD but mine is not the only one.

If or when I start making Object Dock icons, I will draw them from scratch. I would rather redraw the icon in my own style or create a totally new looking icon rather than to just copy the icon.

Isn't it breaking a copyright if you "copy" xyz? Even if you drew it from scratch, you're stilling using their logo, image, etc.? Or is it broken if its become commerical use?

If thats the case then ALOT of people are breaking copyrights. Take a stroll in the OD section. Just about every icon is a copy from the program.

Duff: Many/Most of the developers of these programs have it publicly stated that you may not reuse the graphics from their programs. Most of what people here call "icons" are really just scanned box art and such anyway. That said, WC policy is that the developers don't really mean it when it comes to making shortcuts to their software, they just make public statements like that to protect themselves and then let it slide.

Some of us differ, but this is their site, and they run it as they like. If SD wants to pay to host images that people just res-hack or scan, hey, it's their dime. I could rip out and upload hundreds in an afternoon, but then I wouldn't be deserving of any praise, it's just manual labor. Anyone that has spent time really making an icon from scratch knows what kind of a joke it is. Nothing to comment on, that's for sure.

I just ignore such stuff now.

What I meant was the companys copyright this and that, yet images are scanned, altered etc.

When one says you can't use his or her object/image/icon for xyz reasons, there are skins with copyrighted materials that are copyrighted by big name companys (most likey permmision were not asked to use them).

I don't see the difference between a WB/OD/DX author's work and a big name company of movie, music etc. Doh! I'm rambling, but here's what I'm seeing... it's okay to use the movie/music etc. companys' logos/images (w/o asking) but it's NOT okay to use others WB/OD/DX logos/images etc. w/o asking.

Doh! In other words, you have to ask for permission of the authors here and elsewhere, but not from big companys. I doubt anyone emails game/movie companys if they could use their logo/image, but I could be wrong.

Are you calling them rippers? Just because they are using the actually icons from WinDVD?

For personal use (no one is making money off of Object Dock because it is free) using thoses images is OK.

you telling me that if I want a shortcut to internet explorer in my object dock I have to use something other than the big blue e?

get a life!

Kona: uploading isn't 'personal use', and copyright infringement doesn't have anything to do with making money. In the estimation of many people, those items you linked *are* ripped. Frogboy runs the site the way he wants to, we leave it at that.

This is a sore spot for many of us, kona, please close your cake hole and enjoy the fact that you are allowed to upload stuff you didn't make. If things were even slightly different you wouldn't.

Actually I take that back, and I am sorry. I do like you.

As for the issue at hand, I guess it is twofold. I am thankful they let me upload those images.

I am sorry if the issue upsets you baker, but i understand your position, as well as duff's position.
