How much real software costs

Based on some of the reaction by some users to how "expensive" DesktopX Pro costs, I wrote a little article that talks about why DesktopX Pro costs what it costs and compares it to other "Real" products out there.

well, I can't afford it. But, then angin why would I need it?

That is a good idea, I know that the *some* have been causing me to twitch a bit and pinching my last nerve...

Maybe those that need to will figure it out with it staring them in the face...

I agree in terms of 99% of software out there. In terms of, say, Microsoft, though, I am dubious that the amount of profit on the average 'pro' box is reasonable. Windows, for instance. Compared to the money Microsoft makes on the enterprise level, the home user could pretty much get their OS and Office software for free and not make much of a dent in MS's profits. They have other substantial revenues that could easily greatly offset the price of the average boxed copy.

Just my opinion. Apps like Flash, 3d Max, etc., need to be expensive, because not many people would buy them, even if they were cheap, and they are the cash cows of their developers. The prices of operating systems and other generic software though, should reflect their mass appeal, especially when their creators can make tons of profit without the generic consumer's help.

China - exactly.

What incited me to write it was seeing *Object Desktop* users upset that they don't get that feature. They don't need that feature because they already have DesktopX.

DesktopX Pro is only useful for those who want to create things that other people who don't have DesktopX and aren't realistically going to get DesktopX (corporate clients, casual users, etc.). 

Software that is designed to create things for OTHER people (often for money) tends to cost more than software that is for personal use.

Brad, I have some questions about this:

you can create standalone things right?
These standalone things can be published without any permissions and can also be sold.
The things you create can be custom shaped and can use transparancy.
All the (standard) Desktop X objecs can be used?

Hmm odd. A stand-alone version of snowflakes pegged my cpu at 100%? Very odd since object version I cloned all flakes 8 times and it pegged cpu at just 20%.
