An Englishman's Home Is His Castle...His Computer? Not So Much

Get ready to be scanned

Monday, November 28, 2022 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Personal Computing

Not paranoia...the United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), with a subject's consent (lol), will be scanning computers for vulnerabilities...all in the interest of security, of course. This sort of thing generated our Fourth Amendment.

"The scan is the work of the United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). It says its looking for zero-day vulnerabilities, meaning security holes that hackers are actively exploiting before a fix is available." - John Lister

How solicitous of them.

The idea is that as new threats emerge to take advantage of security flaws in specific software versions, officials can quickly assess how many people could be affected and thus how important it is to quickly develop, distribute and deploy a fix. The agency is looking for "vulnerabilities that are common or particularly important due to their high impact." - ibid

I have no doubt. Here, across the pond, the FBI, NSA and CIA (and probably more) hold routine meetings regarding those vulnerabilities, and then decide which to report and which to leave for their own purposes.

As Sachmo sang, "And I think to myself, what a wonderful world."
