There is another and maybe more simple way to get rid of those pesky Messenger adds, you do it somewhere in the registry. Search google for "How to get rid of Windows Messenger Service" and thats where I found out how to do it

I find the thought that editing the registry for most people will be easier than installing and using a plugin almost comical 
I think that leaving well enough alone and making use of the plugin for those who make use of Ad-Aware is by far a better choice hands down...

Always hated that even in W2K Pro
Messenger Services Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. |

true, but it seems a bit easier to right click on ad-aware and turn on/off the plugin than work through the menus and load up admin/services and disable/enable

I see nothing difficult in just shutting down the Messenger service altogether. It's a one time thing. Never needed to start it back again.

You can also use xp-antispy http://www.xpantispy.org/ which allows you to disable many of the features of XP that you may not want running.

to add some back ground from the link Leo posted here..
Messenger is not the same as the Windows Messenger Service which is being used to exploit Spam.
I think Leo has found a jewel here that many of us will find some real use for !
oh and it is freeware
