it sucks. I hate it. Works OK but doesen't do anything I want it to do.
So...
I have:
Pentium 3 at 733 mhz
192 mb of PC 100 SDRAM
Intel graphics (4 mb onboard video, but it works with DVD's very well)
52x24x53x ReWrite drive
20x DVD drive
LS 120 floppy drive
Realtek 10/100 Tbase ethernet
6.0 Gig HD (I know, I suck!)
Is this computer worthy of the almighty XP OS?
Or do I not have enough memory? Or can I get away with just 192? (planning to upgrade to 512 in about a month.)
No flaming please, I just figured someone has almost the same setup as me and could give some advice.

I just wonder if only having 192 will bog down the system.
I want to use the almighty XP because I need to play with my StarDock toys again! I miss my WB and OD.

256Mb would be preferable, but I ran Outlook, Excel, Word and Powerpoint simultaneously on 128Mb ram as a test without a problem. All our company desktops are that spec and I needed to know how they would perform.

I have an XP box with 256.....works passably [though the gig of DDR3200 400fsb does it better]....

Fuzzy.....that's what I'm running......I should be OK for a little while until OS-bloat rears its ugly head yet again...

Buy a new or used comp with XP, Kona. You'll feel better.

I have 128 Megs of RAM only and I run XP. It's fine. Most Windowblinds skins slow it down a bit, but if I stick to real simple skin and use no wallpapers, my comp runs mostly OK. Of course, when I had 256 it was much better (I busted one of my memory slots), but I'm stuck with what I have.
But, nevertheless, you PC will definately slow down comparatively to ME. Stick with ME another month till you get more RAM, then upgrade.

If you want to play games and run Windows XP, then you might want to try setting up a WinME/WinXP dual boot system. Just give WinME a smaller partition since you would only be using it for gaming. I suspect that Windows XP might slow down gaming on that PC.

I would agree with all suggesting 256+ megs of ram for XP. I had a rig with 128 and XP, it was not pretty. I mean it runs ok, but XP needs room to stretch I guess, the more ram you have with it, the better. Just buy more ram, its cheap ,and easy to install.

DDR is cheap, yes.
SDRAM is expensive. about 65 bucks for a stick of 256.

Kona.......i had an XP pro system similar to your specs running up until about a couple of months ago and after working on a few machines which were fairly new i realised how slow my 'old girl' was in comparison. Sticking in more Ram did not make it appreciably quicker.
I decided the best way forward was to upgrade the processor, Mobo and RAM and graphics card. Before doing anything i sat down and worked out how much i could afford. I had some bucks stashed in my piggy bank and i worked out how much i could add to this from my next two monthly pay cheques. This came to about 250 quid - about 350 bucks.
If you were to do something similar you could get XP, an ASUS or Gigabyte mobo with nForce, an AMD XP 2400 chip and 512mb of DDR RAM for between 300 and 350 bucks if you shop around but i would add a few more bucks and go for an AMD XP 2600 chip with a 333 FSB and quicker RAM.
After i upgraded my system to specs similar to above, plus i added an FX5200 graphics card, the difference was amazing. The speed is awesome.
I guess money is tight but if you just pop on XP plus another stick of RAM you will find it works OK but quite slowly. You will then get gradually frustrated and wish you had listened to Uncle Leo

My sister has a Celron processor with 128 ram and it works fine.
I am sure it would work way better on 256 but I made a mistake when I was ordering and didn't realize it until 3 months later
But she still loves her computer!

I ran XP on a P3-600 with 64MB ram. It wasn't pleasant mind you.. but it did run.
