I'd suggest purchasing the Photoshop WOW book for the version of Photoshop you own. Also, you should (a personal choice) have an account on the Adobe Exchange server as there is more than enough information shared there including what you find on a web search
mmm, maybe someone (me if I've time soon) can throw together a how-to for glass, plastic and such. But the WOW books are a fantastic asset.

xboxlive6... just checked my copy of Photoshop Wow book, and there are numerous pages on how to do it. Some of the associated pictures accomanying the instructions show there are a number of different results achievable. The book also comes with a disc containing 'style sampler' which should also help you. I strongly suggest you go out and get this book.... it is not terribly expensive, and will help you to better your skills. I'm only new to this field as well, but I'm swallowing up as much information as I can get my hands on. One day I hope to be good enough to post something.
.... Great advice Iplural.
