Get Used to the Idea...your Windows PC is over with

Welcome to Windows as a Service (WaaS)

Monday, April 25, 2022 by DrJBHL | Discussion: Personal Computing

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols isn't paranoid. He's actually rather smart, and his reasoning is excellent. I'm not an anti-W11er for no reason. I felt all along the it was essentially unnecessary, as W10 could be continually developed, and that the processor requirement and TP2 dustup were basically nonsense because as long as code will exist, hackers will as well, and no code is un-hackable.

"Yes, the Windows 11 security updates are good — if you have the right hardware. But  as I pointed out recently, you can already use those security updates if you're running the Windows 10 20H2 release (Windows 10 October 2020 Update). So the point in upgrading from Windows 10 to 11 is…what, exactly?" - Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols

I come from a time when the desktop was the revolution...you were given control over your data, word processing, publishing, etc. It was wonderful, if buggy at times. Remember W7? It was great. So is W10! W11 is the tube to DaaS.

DaaS isn't bad except for one thing: You will no longer have control over your OS. You won't be calling the shots, M$ will, and it'll cost a pretty penny, too. Microsoft 365 goes for $33 (US) per month...and will go up. What will W11 OS cost? Count on it. X-Box will be an additional cost, too.

"What I think is important is that, in combination with the subscription feature, this makes it easier for you to pay not just for Microsoft 365, but for Windows itself. No longer will Windows be a one-and-done purchase. It will be forever a subscription service with only one foot in your PC and the other ever more firmly in the cloud...Microsoft sneaked a Microsoft subscription manager into the February 2022 Windows 11 update. Check it out: look into the Windows 11 Settings menu > Accounts and you'll find a new section called "Your Microsoft account." There, you’ll find your Microsoft 365 subscription status, how full your OneDrive cloud storage is, and other details." -

Maybe it pays for a business, I can't opine regarding that.

For me, it's the sneaky, M$y way this is all being done that really causes me great concern, and may well be my exit point from the M$ world. W11 Home users initially required having an M$ account which they could later delete. W11 Pro users had to have an M$ account which they could not later remove and still have W11 Pro. And ask yourselves, "Why do I need an M$ account to dl and install the upgrade which was supposed to be "free"? Well, what's your privacy (nonexistent) worth?

Quoting RedneckDude,

Quoting Jafo,

but I learned decades ago never to use the 'newest' Video driver....not until its inherent bugs were resolved....so I was always several months behind.

This may be a tad OT, but how does one stop Windows Updates from installing gpu driver updates.  Mine keeps effing with me.  I have reinstalled my gfx driver thrice in one day.   GGggrrrrr.

What OS are you on Red. I always go direct to NVidias website, you should be able to stop Windows update from offering updates for other things like GPU Drivers, on Win 11 in update settings, click Advanced Options and move the slider to off, then you can pick and choose when you update.

Win11.  So, turn this off?

Google gave me an option to go to advanced system settings and check the box below, but it hasn't worked.

Sorry, I guess this is off topic. I'll take it elsewhere if I need more info.

Using 0patch is well & good for personal/individual situations but it gets a little hairier when part of a corporate environment requiring adherence to certain security standards.  At present, for instance, if an application or OS is not HIPAA compliant and is used for medical applications, the user could be subject to major fines and exclusion from participation in Medicare.  Once MS stops officially providing security updates (OS is at EOL), it is no longer HIPAA compliant and I don't think "I used 0patch" will cut it in court.

Quoting RedneckDude,

Quoting DrJBHL,

Explain to me why else you need to have an account?

Microsoft Store?

Red, please read this article. The MS store has nothing to do with this.

Actually I do believe the two are intertwined here.

This also ties into my biggest complaint about Windows 11 and what brought me to start 11 in the first place. Windows 11's start menu.

The worst feature in Windows 11 is the FORCED recommendations section. If it is turned off then half the start menu is blank reminding the user that it needs turned back on. Why, because the recommendations are meant to be Microsoft ads for the Microsoft Store (i.e. needing your info). Microsoft was sneaky here because if a user turns it off it looks like a needed feature was turned off and annoys the user to turn it back on.

I do forget about this annoyance since it is fixed with start 11, but if ever there was an example of Microsoft using Windows 11 as a money making service it is with their start menu recommendation area. I know I shouldn't get too comfortable because ads are also being contemplated in Windows 11's explorer in future updates.

I suppose we may need to ask Neil to implement a custom file explorer now in start 11 version 1.3. jk

Just the beginning. Be patient. So much more goodness coming. You think turning the OS into their store (or anyone else's if the price is met) is the end of it?

Again I'll ask you, what's more profitable: Giving you a free OS with the OEM buying it from MS and including the cost (plus profit) with the computer, or renting you the OS? Think Adobe. Once upon a time they sold Photoshop by version. Then came CS (creative suite) with many apps together which cost a bundle and whose "work arounds" were various warez , and now CC (creative cloud) with its rental on-off switch. Which was more profitable?

Strictly from a profit standpoint, it would be dangerous to fumble. Windows Vista / Windows 8 are not that far removed from Microsoft history. Windows 11 may not be meant to be 100 percent free, hence the advertising and subscriptions. But every bad Microsoft OS has historically been skipped completely by users. Windows 7 can still be an option for some. So there is a careful line Microsoft needs to walk down and that is why their profiteering is more subtle. They need their OS to be a success.

Yes...so it's going to be a pain in the arse when MS moves the goal posts and forces people into a subscription basis...and businesses cannot choose an out.

The only option is to kick back hard and loud....but MS is bound to be somewhere between deaf, indifferent and brain dead...

That's probably correct, especially since they're after your money from the go.

I'd question whether W11 is HIPAA compliant...it has at least as many holes as a Swiss cheese...after all, MS's OS's are being security patched all the time. I never looked into it, but there are probably more HIPAA compliant OSs than MS's, although I could be wrong about that.

Brilliant Movie Jafo, i have created a Fantastic 1080p X265 from a Blu Ray Disc in my collection, it is crisp and clear for an 80s movie, you get to see a lot more of those darker scenes as i have used some filters during the conversion.

Yes, one of my favourites.  Intelligent S/F for adults is where I am at,...not Star Wars for rugrats...

Seeing as i have a 30TB Collection, Star Wars in there Jafo

I like lots of different types of Movies and TV shows, from Zombies Like Kingdom and The Walking Dead, through Sci Fi, some comedy and bit's and bobs.

Seeing as a Computer can be used for so much more than just MS products, the idea of Win 11 becoming a Daas does not sit right in my head, not ever app and program used by peeps will have a MS store release, i think we will all have to continue to watch the news Boards, maybe the easiest fix at this time could be to set up with an MS account, then create another and giving it Admin privileges, then delete the original, all done through CMD ran as administrator.

Hi Doc.

I just do not see Windows as a service working for all users and the way they use there machines. Computers can do so much and are used in very different ways. If this is the future of Windows, i think it will be a massive shot in the foot for MS. This kind of model change is so alien to what it has been before. I am watching some of the better conversations on Reddit and fixes and workarounds are already in place, more to come. Like i have said previously, i am not really worried and will find a path to negate this. Lots of the convos i am part of, mostly dismiss this(some do not hence the possible fixes) as Win10 was originally meant to be the last, there was talk about it being a Waas , then all change again and Win 11 is here. The big thing we all know is MS lies, i would not be surprised if this does not come to pass and MS just Ramp up the Data stealing in more ways, again this has so many apps and stuff on the net to reverse this, no matter what happens with the future of Win 11 and maybe 12, there will always be ways and means of peeps using there computers how they want and not what MS wants.

We all know MS has shot themselves in the foot before, trying to push something radical on us and back tracked.

It is one of my Favourites already gave it the X265 treatment and added it to the collection, It's actually Called Zomboat. I was hoping for a season two but that does not look likely now. It is hilarious how the Canal boat it is set on, only just goes a tiny Tad faster than the Patient Zero Zombie and his band of followers chasing it for the whole season.

Do not worry Jafo, no enforced Star Wars in my home, Just plenty of very Cold Beer and a 30TB collection i seem to put more time into enhancing, than i do watching it, we can do a Zombie Night.

Quoting naroon1,

Just checked my fully updated Win 11 Enterprise accounts section, i do not have "Your Microsoft account."  i do have one Nag screen asking me to update my MS info as i have not entered any MS accounts on set up, not for several years now.

https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/18/22940517/windows-11-pro-require-microsoft-account-internet-connection

They're just doing it differently for the different editions of Windows.

Just tell me why W10 continually updated wasn't good enough. I think it's because they want to create a situation where they can bill you on a "rental" basis.

How would it profit M$ to bill you more: Once via the cost of your PC or on a monthly basis?

Hi Doc.

Just gone over those articles and the replies, the author has already listed a workaround and the most simple, log in with a Dummy MS account and set up a local later, then get rid of the MS one. The replies all have workarounds too, many IT peeps leaving replies doubt this article, it was also said Enterprise Editions will not work in the same way, if going by the replies carries any weight, many doubt this, not saying you are wrong Doc, but only being able to use your computer if you pay on an ongoing basis, i am not sure we are any closer to this right now, but time will tell. I am even less concerned after reading all the replies too.
