New WC poll on new library next month

Monday, October 6, 2003 by sig101 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I just noticed that WC is planning to add a new library next month. Some of the poll's choices for user input aren't surprising: Rainlendar, Trillian and even boot screens.

But there is also the option IE/Explorer Toolbar Icon Sets. Does anyone at WC/SD know if this is a reference to a specific app? Like Y'z Toolbar? Or something else? (I think I recall SD previously mentioned revamping WebBlinds but at present WebBlinds only changes the IE toolbar icons. So this also caused me to wonder if there are any plans for a new WebBlinds type app on SD's "to do" list or just it's just not on at all for the near future.)

Kona, is there lead in the paint that you eat or what?

WindowBlinds and DesktopX don't compete.

Secondly: There were SIX poll choices. All but 1 involved people who used DesktopX.

Now, stay with me here okay Kona because statistics seem to give you a real problem:

There were six choices. 782 votes. 285 people said they don't plan to use DesktopX 2. That was the biggest single vote getter. But that's only because the other nearly 500 people who do use DesktopX had their vote split 5 ways.

So it was actualy 500 people using DesktopX in various ways and 285 people who said they would not be using it.

So get this through your head, Kona: DesktopX is very popular.

Here is the Download.com stats on desktop enhancements:

Most Popular
Week ending October 05

 1. Say the Time
62,597 downloads
 2. WindowBlinds
19,847 downloads
 3. DesktopX
15,238 downloads
 4. Matrix Code Emulator Screensaver
12,312 downloads
 5.

CursorXP
11,564 downloads

(Say The Time got a big mention last week, normally it's not in the top 5 at dl.com)

It may not be popular with you but you're not a typical user.  Also, since you haven't ever created a skin, don't have a subscription, and haven't purchased any of the programs and (sorry to say) make obnoxious posts on the forum, I would not consider it a good thing to put up a section that is likely to attract more people of your demographic.

That is what I have been trying to politely (before, now I'm past polite and into rude) trying to imply. That if this site became overrun by people who don't make skins and don't buy software and don't get subscriptions, we'd be up the creek.

That is why Rainlendar has me concerned. It isn't going to likely bring in new people to the site. Instead, exposure on WC is likely to make it very popular while possibly attracting people who won't contribute to the site but rather use up its resources.

I don't know... it seems that the poll is neck and neck for Rainy and EI Toolbar icons.

No body ever talked about the toolbar icons before so I think when offered a choice some bolted the Rainy camp for Toolbar icons and other selections.

SPEAKING OF screensavers....

So its settled.

Windowblinds gets a new section for IE Toolbars, Rainy gets a whole new section, Boot screens get the boot, The new IM section is now open (From ICQ to Trillian and Yahoo!)

Yes, thank me later.

I had to say this:

There is alot more people worse than me on this site. Alot more. One of them being UzEE. So I gather from your posts you do not like me. I never said you had to. You didn't have to resort to being rude and crude. We are adults here! I used to be a troll but I have shaped up and tried to help people. I don't have all the answers like yrag or china but Lord forbid I actually make a skin. I know right now it will be rejected even if it was done by a GOOD artist and uploaded under my name. I will get a subsciption as soon as money is not so tight. Then no one can call me in so many words a freeloader anymore.

Rainy skins would be a nice addition I still believe. Give them a chance Brad. they have a place in the skinning world just like LiteStep and WB.

Kona, as a polite suggestion, when the CEO of the company that owns a site says something to you, you may want to take it to heart.

What he is saying is a fact of business.  If we have to pay for extra bandwidth to support a program that will not induce extra sales, how does that benefit the site?  Having more people who don't contribute to the site does no good. All it does is cost more and doesn't allow us to give more benefits to the people who contribute.

And, I really take offense to you saying that a skin that you submit would be rejected just because of your name.  I don't even look at names unless there is something "wrong" with the submission.  If you think that the admins of this site are that nasty, then I think that you need to find another site to hang out at.  We treat each submission with the same guidelines and could care less who submitted it.  If it is good, it gets accepted.  If it is bad or pirated, it gets rejected.  It's as simple as that.

of course i voted Rainlendar, but with now 484 votes (very fiew in fact !!!), Windows XP boot screens, IE/Toolbar icon sets, Trillian and Rainlendar seem to get almost the same votes ... doesn't it mean that Sardock should think of adding more than one new section ???

They look like they are about the same, but out of the top three, one has about 20% more votes.  (Rainlender is in third position, btw, at this point.)  There really hasn't been many people voting at all.  The "what's your favorite season?" poll had more voters than this one.  492 votes (which is where it currently is) is less than 1/1000th of the registered users.  Actually, it might be less than that because I lost track of registered users awhile ago   I know that we get about 2 million uniques, but I would need Frogboy to clarify the number of registered users.  I was hoping that there would be more votes by now

There are about 700,000 registered users of WinCustomize.

We'll need at least 1,000 respondants before we can draw any conclusions.

We are working on a possible legal way of doing boot screens btw. One that would not involve replacing the kernal or patching it or some other evil stuff (yes, even programs like BootXP ultimately patch the kernel which makes very bad things likely in the future).

We've already talked to Microsoft about it. They're okay with it as long as the program isn't modifying the system kernel. Presently, there are zero programs that apply boot screens that don't mess with the kernel. So we're going to see if it's possible to do it without mucking around with replacing it.  If it is possible, then we could do boot screens that have lots of colors and higher resolution.

Wow, Brad that's so cool that SD is looking to see if there's a possible alternative method of changing the bootscreen without replacing the kernal!

Bootscreens for me aren't a big deal since it's just a few seconds on the screen, but I'd be more inclined to consider changing them if SD had an app that I regarded as safer than the existing methods (either manual or the other proggies). Also with the current bootscreen programs and the bootscreen libraries, from a PC security standpoint I'd not be that keen on downloading someone else's unknown .exe files. Although of course one could make one's own but that would still involve messing with the MS file.

Leave it to SD to see if there's a way that avoids the concerns and issues previously discussed. Even if the results turn out to be not quite what some would hope for, kudos for pursuing the possibilities.

KG: I find it interesting if not a bit frustrating that more people responded to the favorite season poll than the new library poll to date. Given the numbers of requests and threads over time about new libraries and wish lists one would have thought that people would jump on the opportunity to provide input when asked.

BTW, if we do a bootscreen program it would be released as a freeware program.
