CD CRC Check

Well, i got a new CD and friend has loaded some sort of software on it. But, when i try to copy a file, it says: CRC Error. What can i do?
is there any software with which i can recover the file from the cd?
and please dont tell me that i should give the CD back to him!

Some sort of software? You don't know what you are trying to copy?

I think you should heed your own words since you know better and 'Give the CD back to him!'

It's a way of checking software integrity, you mean.

Ask your friend to burn it again and to do it right this time.

I heard that certain software contain voluntary errors, so that when they are copied, CRC errors occurs, making the copy unusable. Dunno if it's true or if it makes any sense. :/

It's a failed burn. What probably happened is part of the file you are trying to extract didn't get burned the right way. Thus it's an incomplete/corrupt file and it gives you a CRC error. Like craeonics said...ask your friend to make you another copy.

Is there some sort of way to recover the file?
I guess not...but i am able to open all other files on the CD! just this one is bothering me... because this is the SETUP.EXE file!

Yes...there are proggies that will read 'damaged' CD media....but if there's a CRC error in the setup.exe the chances are that the 'installer' will be fragged and not worth the try...

well, if it is some other file then?
there is one more file which i found out didnt open. i guess thats some kind of document. will i be able to open it?
well, what are the programs Jafo? that will make my googling easier

Can't remember the names...do a Google with cd and recovery and data in the selective searches....that should do it...
