Laptops: Battery life

Well, I have a Laptop andi hardly use it without pluggin in the cable. Does it matter? Is it good for the battery? As i always run it on A/C Power.
Also, I see a small performance decrease if i remove the adapter. Why is this so? I hear a beep and then the screen goes a bit dark (less bright). hmm...i have something to look into...
And by the way, my ATI is working fine now! no more crash. I guess that was due to processor over heating...and now i am well ventilated

First off I wouldn't worry about keeping it connected all the time, the batteries used in laptops of recent years hold up pretty good. As for the drop you notice when you disconnect it from the adapter, well thats normal. You see, when you have it connected the computer is provided with optimum power to all its resources. When you detach the cord though, it switches over to battery power and first and foremost the battery, no matter how topped off, will never deliver 100%. But most importantly, the computer takes measures to try and conserve as much power as possible so that it can stay on for a long period of time. That little be you hear is the computer letting you know that it is switching over to battery and you are now borrowed time

mine runs 2.5 hours from full chrge to sleep mode when it is ready to die.
though it is a newer battery from a T30 used in a T22...
makes a big difference because I run a second 20 gig drive and a wireless nic at all times.

oh and you should let it run down now and then and fully charge also

Yes, I did neglect to include that didn't I. That does promote longer life!

Yeah. I do that in least once a month. My laptop, a desktop replacement type laptop, has a shorter battery life of 2 hours but it still lasts that long after 7 months.
