Every now and then a popup comes up and says "do you wish to install gator componets from gain INC?"
It has happened twice today to me and a bunch of times before in the last week.
Last time I checked, Goter componets are nothing but spyware and such.
Anybody else have this problem?

Try running IE without any pop up blockers you will see what I mean.
II just scanned my computer with Ad Aware and it came up clean.
I also had another popup...something about a virus has infected IE click here to buy a antivirus scan or something like that.
Of course i checked with my Anti virus proggie and I am clean.
Maybe I need to run MyIE2 more ofter so pop ups do not bother me.
I just though WC wasn't supposed to have advertisments that have pop ups, thats all!

Wincustomize does not have ads that popup. And you just got an IE virus.
Adaware is updated right (along with the newest version?)? It should find it and get rid of it. You use Kazaa? Gator hijacks your browser:

Yeah Legolas, I had the same problem, it ain't just Gator, there's other stuff too like nCase. Doesn't really happen to me anymore, but I will confirm that it is spyware and that it did happen to me and some friends of mine too.

Just because you get a pop up when browsing WC doesn't necessarily mean it's coming from WC.

Oh and what the hell is "EbatesMoeMoneyMaker", just go to your system configuration utility and you'll see all SORTS of crap installed on your system. It P***es me off.

Get spybot search & destroy, update it then run it, it will find any spyware and remove ir. Also has an immunize feature which refuses pop ups and installs from known spyware sources, very helpful.

Actually I do not think that anything Gator would ever be used at this site for any reason because of the negative return from doing so.
I might be mistaken, but I figure that WinCustomize is a bit more ethical than that.

I've been running and repeatedly refreshing while not logged in (so I see all the ads) and I am not getting pop-ups of anything. If you are logged in, you don't get manners, either. What you are reporting does not sound like it is coming from this site. Please remember that some site have delayed spawn pop-ups. I will look further into it on Monday when I get into the office if anyone else can replicate this on our site.

Could these popups be Messenger Service type popups? Blocking these types of popups is a good idea, in any case IMHO... you can read about it, and block them here -> http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

It sounds like an ActiveX component for downloading unsolicited crud like GAIN/Gator to one's computer, rather than a messenger service pop up. I think Kona (aka although all I think of is Legos when I see that nic) said before that he's running a firewall (at least I hope so) and if so it shouldn't be messenger svs pop ups.
Outside of tightening one's IE settings to disable ActiveX and scripts, one easy way to keep some spyware from being downloaded at all is to download SpywareBlaster. It blocks such things through placing killbits in the registry to prevent installation of specific spyware programs. So you don't have to add yet another running program to your PC in addition to pop up killers and whatever else you may have running. It's free and available here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html and there is also a support forum for it. All one need do is occasionally check for program or definition updates since new spyware or new methods are being introduced fairly quickly. Much easier to prevent an "infestation" sometimes than clean out afterwards. Again it's freeware although the author does accept donations. Just thought I'd suggest another no-resource-using preventative measure, not intended as a substitute for Adaware or SpyBot S&D.
As for where that thing is coming from, the purveyors of scumware are getting pretty sneaky, so it may or may not be from the site on which you saw it, depending where you were before. As KG previously mentioned their ad provider is not supposed to run such stuff here. So at least we know that WC doesn't approve of or willingly allow such adverts and downloads to be associated from this site. As long as KG is on the case this site at least will be checked out just in case the ad provider has lapsed from their agreement.

Nope. I refuse to use Kazaa. And I hate Gator crap.
Koa, I use Windows 98 with NO messenger at all. Don't even have it installed I think.
I do have a active software and hardware firewall and..

I do not have any gator crap on my machine. I was trying to point out that a popup has happened to me 3 times while on this site asking if I wish to install componets from gator....

I didn't think you were infected, just that this thing uses an ActiveX component to try and install itself to your PC. At least you got a prompt, they've been known to stealth download to PC's with low browser settings as noted in the article. The article also talks about Gator using delayed pop-unders so that it doesn't necessarily appear on the site that actually generated the prompt for download.
