FDA issues tampering warning

05:04 PM PDT on Friday, September 19, 2003

From Staff and Wire Reports

SEATTLE - The Food and Drug Administration has issued a vague warning to consumers in Western Washington to check for possible tampering on any recently purchased supermarket products.

The agency says this is a precautionary measure because of an anonymous letter describing puncturing of a small number of products.

KING
The FDA asks people in Western Washington to look at products purchased in the last few days.
The FDA says the products may be punctured.

No actual tampering has been reported at this time.

The FDA says any product or packaging could be affected and asks people to look for small punctures, holes, or even drill marks, and to pay close attention to purchases made in the last few days.

The vague threat neither identifies any stores nor does it name any specific products.

The FBI and FDA are investigating.

Anyone who finds signs of tampering should call the FDA's emergency operations center at 301-443-1240.

Geez...! I've had fears about this for a long, long time...I won't go into details about what I fear the worst because I don't want to put any ideas 'out there' but how sick does a person hafta be? *sigh*

Hi Dor

What scares me is the idea of hypodermic injections of 'communicable diseases or life threatening bio-toxins'...I mean...how can you see THAT with the naked eye when it's been secrety injected into that steak you just bough or that sour cream/yogurt container? I've been talking about this for a few years now privately amongst people I trust (mainly family) because it's been a fear of mine (even before 911).

When my daughter was little I would never let her eat anything that had the remotest chance of tampering until I'd eaten it first and I'd wait 24 hours and if I was alive and kicking...well you get the idea.

If this is a hoax (and what a scummy one at that)...it at least will hopefully serve as a warning to better secure our grocery stores... Big brother sometimes IS necessary.

The incident was at the eastside Safeway, she works the westside one.
