word works, defrag works, sys restore works, netscape works, trillian works.
If this comes through underlined it is not intentional...

...it's not so much the dust as the cockroaches. I can keep this place nearly 100% pest free on my own, but now it is a battle. And when a neighbor moves out.... there are a few bad days.Reply #165 Sunday, September 28, 2003 3:24 PM

The best chance I will have to do this is next Thursday, or Friday (If I can keep it working that long. It seems to be getting worse.)I'll let you know how it went.
Thanks again.

Sorry to bother folks.

you will probably need one or two cross head screw drivers. all of my cards are secured in with one cross head screw at the "back" of the case, where they connect to the outside world.
presuming you can get the case open ok, and know which card the modem is (the one you had the phone cable plugged into, hopefully that is enough to indentify it clearly) you just unscrew the screw at the top back of the card where it attaches to the case.
next, pull the card out. i gently leaver them back and forward in line with the slot, to avoid risking bending the card sideways.
with a bit of gentle rocking / pulling it should come out fine.
then just cover the hole at the back of the case, put case back together, and turn on

feline hopes this is the sort of answer you needed

So I will get those screwdrivers (and I am assuming that they are the standard kind, but since mine is magnitized maybe I better go buy one). Also I will figure some covering.
Thanks. I probably won't be back until after it is done. I can load one page, maybe two. Then I have to wait for awhile (almost like it needs to cool down).

GM.....a magnetic screwdriver won't affect your computer....the field is far too weak.
The screwdriver you'll need is called a Phillips Head.....that's the 'cross' one, not the blade type [standard].
The only potential dramas you may have is static discharge.....easily solved by neutralizing any differential between yourself and the computer by earthing yourself to the computer. [touch the metal casing].
Disconnect the power prior to poking around with the driver to eliminate silly things such as electrocution....[just like a knife in a toaster].
If at any time you get a bunch of the colly-wobbles and fear for the comp's future survival simply pack it up and take it to someone you know has 'done it before'.
In reality though, removing a PCI Modem from a case is a quite painless affair....

These vary from system to system...I have a Gateway "mid-tower" which uses a thumb-screw for the card retention cover, so I didn't need a screwdriver. But I had to pull back on that cover to remove my graphics card. Don't worry GM...I stressed over upgrading my GC, but it was easier than I thought.

Unless you have a laptop like myself.

Thanks everyone.... I didn't get it done yet. There is so much madness going on in my house these last days I hardly can think straight. I turn to the computer during those times, else I couldn't stand it... that is an extra reason I can't afford to have it go down. All this is also affecting my attention and my mood, I'm not sure I am very bright right now, and if I goofed.... I'm not sure I can risk getting any lower.Thursday I will get the beginning of a few days respite (I will be pulling whatever social and legal strings I can find to make it permanent... sometimes I think our health and justice system really stinks) That day, I will set aside time to do this.
In the meantime, I am sorting old files and backing up stuff. I have caught some flaws this way to make it run a little better (free space also went from 58 to 63%), but that internal modem is always coming back.
Thanks again.

goodmorphing ***embarrassed*** wishes she didn't write all that. Sometimes all this tension gets to me. Sorry.
...anyways.... going to do it now. Thanks for all the help so far.

hehe.... it was easy after I got the case open! Computer is happy, seems faster! But there was lots of dust in there. I wiped a little up, but I was afraid to touch much. Are we supposed to clean in there now and then?

Never a good thing. You should be ok if you are careful though.
PS: Good work!
