Constructive or Destructive Criticism?

Sunday, September 14, 2003 by PixieChick | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've been using WB for a little over a year now and have seen, of late, some disturbing changes in the comments being made about skins.

Instead of encouragement or offering some assistance to people new to skinning (who at least have the courage to try), I am seeing more and more heartless and hurtful comments on here...not to mention the change in the language being used and allowed!

I applaud anyone who tries skinning, whether its their first attempt or one hundredth, for they have more courage and patience than I.

A few weeks ago, I thought I might like to give it a shot...what the heck, right?! I have been nothing but more discouraged from even attemtping to try by these kinds of comments....

I am not one who believes in censorship of any sort but that only goes so far when you have to rely on the goodness of mankinds' heart to show some respect! Maybe it's time for the proprietor's of WB to start monitoring and censoring some of these comments!?

The site does frown on cussing and does remove malicious connemts as they are not tolerated. There is a need for more constructive criticism, not the hurtful kind.

PixieChick....simply point an Admin at any 'offending' comment and it will be dealt with, as will the person making it/them...

PixieChick, Jafo's right. I've let him know a couple of times about inappropriate comments and they are dealt with. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to stop them from being posted in the first place but the admins will clean it up when they are notified.

btw - I appreciate the comments you've left on my skins!

Ditto! I agree with PixieChick .There's a lot of hurtful comments being posted when In fact the more experienced skinners should be giving helpful/constructive critism and advise. My feeling do not stem from any adverse comments I may have gotten; I can take it. But what a way for a brand new (and possibly sensitive) skinner to start out. Nasty/visious comments are either going to make or break a person.

crissy14.....again, just point me to them...[or any of the other admin/wizops]...and they will be dealt with.

Wincustomize.com is quite a large, popular site where the admins may not notice some or even many of the comments being placed, so it's not until we are notified that anything can happen.

Some we see on our own [byluck] but most will be brought to our attention by the rest of you 'out there'....

Be pro-active, not 'reactive'....

Sorry to find your considering not skinning PixiChick, though I will say please do

I've yet to finish anything, though I have been and am working on some things. Yet I also know that even getting up enough gumption to submit anything is going to be another personal trial for me.

I guess what I want to say is, don't let anyone hold you back and do not feel you have to hold back from anyone. I do not mean blat them with the keyboard, but do send an admin notice and a link if possible to speed things up. They will deal with it and you will not have to worry about the person in the least.

I would use email though, because it helps keep things quiet and on as much as an even keel as possible. Not to keep thing hidden from others, but to keep from others jumping the gun and possibly causing them self issues when trying to help where they do not really have the options to really do so beyond moral support..

anyway... sorry it's happened and that it gives you pause :/

Well, I certainly appreciate all of the support!

Most of the comments I made initially were in reaction to some comments posted yesterday to a "newbie" and just made me think "Wow! It's a good start but after that I'll be surprised to hear from him/her again!"

Just gives me pause....but believe me...after 32 years on this planet, nothing will stop me from doing what I want let alone rude comments! I hear enough of them driving down the road and it hasn't kept me from getting behind the wheel! lol

Simply pointing out something I've noticed that seems to have changed this past year. A change that shouldn't be welcome in any artistic community!

Thanks Again,
Pixie
