Question on Japanese Magazine

Tuesday, September 2, 2003 by starone | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've been contacted by a Japanese magazine that distributes CD's. They want to include my windowblinds. I recall something similar having been posted last year, but do not remember the outcome. I think more were against than for. Any enlightenment is much appreciated.

I vaguely remember the mention. At least they've contacted you for permission, which is good. Perhaps you could limit them to skins of your choice..sort of a sampling...and get as much as possible, as far as agreement terms, in advance (in writing). Not sure about compensation part, I'm sure someone else here will have better suggestions though.

Congratulations!

I got contacted too. They asked if they could include my Windowblinds skins on the CD and said there will be an article about WB in the magazine.

I said sure, why not? We distribute them here for free, why not let a Japanese magazine spread them and an awareness of the software in Asia. The more people who use it the more good skinners there will be...

That's a good point, I thought maybe they were going to sell the CDs...but now realize it would be sort of like Computer Arts Magazine attaching a freebie CD to their issues.

The last company that contacted me [I said yes - Media Player skins]...did send me a copy of the Mag and the CDs....[as asked]....they had fairly explicit porn content as well....more Hentai than Anime...and alsoreal-life action that had specific localised 'censoring' blotches and/or edits. Just something to be aware of...

I agreed on the condition that my skins were included in their original unmodified form and that I was clearly credited as the author. I also requested that they send me a copy of the magazine so that I could see how my work was being represented.

starone....nothing.....I'm an adult....and see no specific harm-by-association, besides, the Japanese are an odd bunch with a 'different' culture, and it's not my place to prejudge or condemn.....just others may be more 'concerned' about their skins being featured in a mag where 'skin' has a more 'traditional' meaning....

Dear Author

I am Hideyuki Hayasaka, editor in a Japanese publishing company "Shinyusha".
Now I am editing a PC magazine the name of "Windows100% SUPER!".

I have been contacted 3 times. I kept deleting the email thinking it was some kind of a joke, but after reading you all, I think I'll give it a go.

I think that the CD of this magazine would be like a WinCustomize library

I have ask them last year, I don't remember if it was the same magazine, to send me a copy to see, but they never did

People are only asking, instead of the authors here which only give!

We used to get a lot of this stuff back on Skinz.
Most folk give permissions and ask for at least a copy of the mag in return.
Most of the Japanese companies are happy to oblige.

It all seems genuine enough, and the replies people have been getting upon giving permission aren't just cut-and-paste automated replies, which is sometimes the case. Let's just see if they stick to their word.

These same type of magazines ask to put shareware versions of the software on the CDs that they ship with their magazines (great way to attract customers).  I would say, that since they are asking for permission, that they are a reputable magazine.  If they weren't, then they would just put the stuff on the CD knowing that 99% of the time nobody will ever know.  (How many of us read Japanese magazines?)

I also remember some ppl never got the mag after they gave permission... but to be in a mag is good so why not give permission nothing to lose there but something to share
