What is more difficult??

Sunday, August 17, 2003 by cosmo-alpha | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Just a ponderable from a non-artistic non-skinner. Of the various libraries available, which is more labor intensive? Wallpapers, icons, cursors, W/B, etc. I see a lot of movement on wallpapers, yet very little on icons. Some movement on cursors and none at all on FX. Is one harder than the other? Why? Looking forward to your opinion.

The reason wallpapers are moving is because they lowered the standards of what is accepted. Icons you just have to make alot of to cover alot of the programs. Cursors, haven't tried. Actually I haven't tried much of anything other then Object Dock, 1 icon, and wallpapers.

I find WindowBlinds to be more time consuming since it's divided in two parts. 1) Creating the designs of each part and 2) setting the codes for positions, lengths, widths, etc.
Icons work the same, and like Weaksid said, you need to make a lot of them to cover all the programs.
Cursors are sets of a consistence number of images [not as many as an Icon Pack]
Wallpapers for the most part are much easier to make, and you have a greater number of people making wallpapers as oppose to the ones skinning.
This is why you will see more movement in certain libraries and not in others.

As far as difficulty, Windowblinds or Windows Media Player get the trophy. Time consuming, it depends, a good Icon set can take months to finish (150+ icons). A good Windowblind skin can also take that long, same for WMP. It took The Skins Factory 2 months to make their T3 skin. It all depends on the amount of work the author puts in...

If I had to pick the most labor-intensive...I'd say Windowblinds. So many small images...so many sizes to set...

Hus looks at SkinStudio...wonders how the hell does this darn thing work??!

My last WB took over 50 hours but even I dont think I have enough patience for an icon package.

Why do you see no movement in FX? Is there just nothing left to do with that effect, or is it really difficult?

I think Icons are way more labor intensive than a Windowblind. They take forever

Cursors are a piece a cake (Depending on how much animation)

WMP, Winamp, LiteStep...I'm not much of a coder so I couldn't tell ya

Oh, the worse thing has to be icons. By far. Pixel by pixel drawing takes FOREVER. There are very very few good iconists.

Windows Media Player is different. It can be long but doesn't have to. One would consider it difficult because it requires coding and most artists aren't programmers.

WindowFX is just plain coding. They're not skins, but plugins and effects you add to WinFX. Very little graphics, a lot of coding. Since there are a lot more artists than coders around these woods, it's normal that uploads aren't too frequent.

Windowblinds are the most work of the skins I have made.
cursorXP can take some work depending on the animation.
While making Iben's Green Diodes for cursorXP
I created 178 files,10 folders, and used 14MB disk space to store it all.

WindowBlinds requires the most work of the things I've tried, theres a lot to skin. Litestep can be complicated but like Jafo said, its freeform so it is as easy or complicated as you want to make it.

Icons are the hardest for sure, I am working on my 3d pack at the moment, and 1 icon costs me about half an hour.

However personaly I think its more fun that skinning wb.
