Current Poll: Boot Screens?

Wednesday, August 6, 2003 by eidylon | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

What is being referred to as boot screens? We have the logins section. Is this actually refering to the old .bmp boot screens from the Win9x days?

The screen that comes on before the logon.

On 2K/XP? That first one with the little blue progress bar on the bottom you mean?

Ah... okay. Thanks. I would never have even thought of skinning that thing, it goes by so fast.

Skin it, but don't blink. You might miss it.

Indeed, I use to change the one on my puny Mac all the time, it would really be nice to be able to so with a Stardock product for Windows.

I'd much rather see HoverDesk than bootscreens.......... why do people worry about something so trivial? How often is it even seen, and  for only a few seconds?

I'm surprised Rainlendar isn't in the poll.

Bootscreens seem to be increasingly popular though. In addition to hacking it yourself there is BootXP and another application that can change them. How safe it is depends I suppose on the user's ability to get things back to normal if anything screws up.

I tried the BootXp for 1 day and didn't care for it. Resolution & quality were low & I didn't like the way it hacked the file, so I uninstalled it. Like was said before, It's something not often seen and not for very long (hopefully). For me it just wasn't worth it.

I don't restart my computer enough to even notice the 'Bootscreen'...It's only 16 color...why bother? Why mess with the ntoskrnl.exe for a couple of seconds of a crappy display?

Strange they are as popular as they are.

I'm also surprised Rainlendar was not on the poll...Seems there has been far more requests for Rainlendar

Rainlendar is nice indeed, but now you can make a nice calendar with Desktop X too.

But... I want a Trillian section!!!!!!!

rainlendar was my vote in the 'other' category in wc's latest poll. there are plenty enough bootscreen choices on other sites to warrant putting it on wc. imo. as far as bothering to change bootscreen, as brief as it is seen(or isn't), it's still nice to change to complete your customizing experience.

Now that I think about it,YZ's Toolbar comes to mind,or better yet a Stardock version .If your not familiar with it,hers a SS.Notice the new icons and missing microsoft flag.Koasati turned me on to this.

I.R: Stardock already has a product doing that, it's called WebBlinds. But it does also a few other things such as skin IE (kinda like a IE only version of Windowblinds), block popups, etc.

Thats right!Keila told me about that!Looks like a great program but I dont have a full OD subscription yet and YZ was free. And since I run WB IE is skinned already.WebBlinds looks considerably more powerful tho.

I'm with Koa-san on this one. Hoverdesk I see/use all the time - bootscreen/logon I hardly ever see, since my pewter is on 24/7
