This RIAA thing is getting scary...

Tuesday, July 29, 2003 by AlphaDraco | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Ok, so the RIAA is filing lawsuites against people with as few as 5 downloaded songs at $750-$150,000 per song!?! I wonder what will happen after they bankrupt a few parents.... And, of course, it turns out that my ISP is one of the only ones NOT fighting to keep the names of the swappers! I guess it works for the RIAA, but I feel for the people that they attack... This has gone too far.

(By the way, hi...been away for a while.)

8) Mostl importantly the RIAA is going after those who have 1000's of songs on thier computer and lets other download them. Not the 300 or so people (and if they are going after people who have 300 or so songs that is a bad idea as well)

Boy are you wrong. According to the guest on The Screen Savers a while back, the RIAA has filed lawsuites against people with as few as * songs on their computer. They are adding 75 new people to their list EVERY DAY.

Is that a rumor about just having 5 songs on the hard drive? I would think that would be way off base to go after 5 songs.

I do wonder though, how exactly will this all work out. Is this some sort of "Shock and Awe" campaign or do they plan to continue this for years to come?

The RIAA Campaign is only going to have limited success, when you look at the world Situation with regards to P2P. No matter if the RIAA stops everyone in the US from using P2P, millons of downloads will still happen all over the world.

Very interesting make-up of those who download music.

And the comments on the board for the story is rediculous

Makes me say there is a solution, but the indrustry would have to except that thier will be some loss when it come to usage on the customer side.

One file shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is one crime.

Two files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is two crimes.

Three files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is three crimes.

Four files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is four crimes.

Five files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is five crimes.

Six files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is six crimes.

Seven files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is seven crimes.

Eight files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is eight crimes.

Nine files shared without express consent of its owner/copyright holder is nine crimes.

Anyone see the trend?

Just because 'some' files may be 'freely' shared without causing injury or 'loss' does NOT mean all are.

The RIAA is a local entity.  America is NOT the world, even though it often thinks that way.

Kazzaa is an Australian creation and in Australia there IS NO LEGAL loophole called 'fair use'.

Ah, but if we didn't have legal loopholes we wouldn't be the America you all know and love.
