Has anyone read a good book lately?

I could use a good book about now. I used to read a lot. I loved books by William Wharton (his book "Dad" was a treasure, the movie did not do it justice) and John Irving (his use of language is exquisite). I also love scientific works (accurate and non technical), especially about molecular neurophysiology (there are a few out there).
Currently I am reading "The Fourth Hand" by John Irving, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett, and Da Jesus Book.... The New Testament translated into Hawaii Plidgin. I usually read more than one book at a time (but four is rare even for me).
I just wondered if anyone knew some good books?

movies from books are rarely any good unless you see the movie before reading the book.
Grisham's "the Firm" was really interesting and intricate while the movie certainly wasn't - Tom Cruise didn't help much either!

What are books? 
I haven't read a book in a long time. Other then skimming my computer books to look up how to do certain things. Or a comic book like Another Day In Cubicle Paradise by Scott Adams (Dilbert). Yes, I am a computer person. I don't even like to take written tests, I prefer them to be computerize. School is going to be a pain because I found that I have two classes of compisition in my two years there.

I've a collection of Heavy Metal, Epic and Gore magazines from the late 70's through the mid 90's
Oh and some of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics also
Good Omens, is one of my favorite books when thinking of that topic, or Stigmata is also, good flic also.

Many Wincustomize readers selected books from today’s so-called storytellers, I think all the great writers are dead and the direction of writing has suffered from commercialism, as well as a lack of vision, with very few exceptions. The only motivation for a writer today is whether or not a story will be lucrative.
Let us talk about the way a story should be told…Every time I read a classic like Macbeth I find something I may have interpreted a different way the last time I read it. When I first approached Shakespeare it was as a student for an assignment. My first introduction to Shakespeare was Macbeth …It turned out to be my favorite of all Shakespeare’s stories.
I was a bit intimidated and I thought Shakespeare was for people that were much more intellectual than I was … the more I read and realized what the obscurities meant and exactly what was going on I quickly began to realize that I was not reading family entertainment…This was about murder…. murder most foul… and I was just lost in this amazing tale spun with all the intricacies as a spider spins a web. Where is a novel today that can compare to these tales? The short answer is that the art is gone, forgotten in the wasteland of commercialism and the failure of society to understand genius?

I disagree. Lord Of the Rings Barely leaves anything out if you watch the extended DVD. Same with the Harry Potter series. Spiderman Rocked!

Is this is the Katherine Kerr 'Deverry' series?
If so, yes indeed, addictive with great writing and attention to detail.
I liked the first half dozen but by the time the scenario had shifted from the Peninsula campaigns of the Napolenonic Wars to South America I decided that Sharpe was really just too lucky in avoiding a messy death .... sometimes a 'good thing' can be taken too far!
Like all of Cornwall's books these are very good in attention to detail.
