Ram

Compatability

Wednesday, July 31, 2019 by Chasbo | Discussion: Personal Computing

Hi,

This is a question for the computer people who I know frequent the forum.

I recently got a new computer. It had 8gb of ram. I wanted to go to 16gb. I went to Best Buy and they ordered the 8gb for me. When it came I installed with no problems. It shows up and is working fine. Then I went into Wise Care and this is what I found:

Both are DDR4 but the one that came with the computer has a speed of 2666 MHZ and the one I added has a speed of 2400 MHZ. I googled it and what I found is that the computer will actually go with the lower speed while in use and there shouldn't be a problem. As I say everything is working fine as far as I can tell. Is there any long term problems that might come up by using the 2 different speeds of ram?

I'm really not that savvy when it comes to computer hardware. This computer is much better than the old one I was using. Any feedback on this is appreciated.

Should not cause any issues Chuck and the speed difference is minimal. It should be fine. I use Wise Care 365 too, it's great!

No problem at all and as you found it will run at the lower speed ram. Is this a laptop or a desktop?

Yup, all should be well.

All that matching ram ended a while back. Used to be that every stick had to match speed and size/amount.  Not anymore.

Exactly.

It's still 'ideal' to match speeds....as you typically pay more for faster...so if one is throttled back you're not getting entirely what you paid for
