Linux

Sunday, July 6, 2003 by MadIce | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Lately I see some people trying to advocate Linux here. Interesting, but of little use on a Windows Customization site. A statement like "this works better on Linux" may or may not be true, but is annoying. You are of course free to have your own opnion, but I think it doesn't serve any purpose here.

MadIce predicts there is a 99% chance that this thread will end up in a discussion how great Linux or the Mac is.

Maybe it will attract the Linux and Mac advocates and cause the rest of the threads to be free from this nonsense.

NOTE: not all progams used on linux are free, however, the thing is correctly called a gnu. linux is the kernel, and the gnu is a free computer with free programs. people who make new variations of gnu/linux might not know that, and therefore force people to have to buy. think of it as a way back to the greedless utopia of long ago.

Microsoft Office or OpenOffice

actually MS is feeling the bite because of OpenOffice and has dropped Pro and Home editions $100.00 respectively..

Ok I have decided to risk my life in here Yeah I really haven’t used Linux or Mac for a fair enough amount of time to know if I could get used to them, I have bought every Windows, starting with the 9x series then 2000 and finally XP. The only two operating environments I use today is either Win 98 or Win XP pro. I would not however want to fly on an airplane powered by Windows, think about that for a minute, this airplane powered by Windows?

Yeah right, at 20,000 feet the pilot gets a message an error has occurred would you like to send a message to Microsoft? …. As a plane filled with screaming passengers praying to god plummets to earth.

As far as the contest goes, hacking a site running on Linux was worth more points than hacking a site running on Windows. The larger number of Linux hacks tells me more hackers were out to rack up the big points. This is just like when Presidential candidates mostly focus on targeting states that hold the most electorial votes. Also, these statistics don't say what security measures if any the sites that were hacked used. Maybe sites with little cash flow that use Linux for it's low cost cannot afford good system security staff.

hey tech I am going to say that at least your not trying to defend OS X like I was a few months back. But after playing around with linux I must say Windows XP is more secure and holds up better. Sorry

actually tech cat that contest was on sunday.
anyway the fact I see is that most linux admins have the mind set that they are safe from any sort of hack. And tend not to do much of anything to protect their network entry points around such machines.
This sort of cad mindset is what exactly is attracting the hacks.
In the end its a good thing. Finally the holes will become more obvious.
Just because one has not exploited the hole does not mean it does not exist.

Before you refere to me as anti linux. Let me tell you I use 3 linux file servers at work I have two installs at home. I just want ppl that seem to think its bullet proof to know it is NOT.

Kona, how is XP more secure and hold up better? Proof please. How does XP compare to OS X? How does OS X compare to Linux?

The only fully functional Firewall is an Air Firewall

Static, kind of my point with the only secure OS/NOS is the one still on the CD in the box.

In other words no OS and no Firewall is absolutely secure?

Considering I spent a year of my life dedicated to finding and writing proof of concept exploits for software and appliance firewalls (for a security company)...

No.

nope...

They can claim that label, but if it can be engineered it can be reverse engineered and there is not one piece of hardware that functions without software of some sort, bits and bytes, and those can be manipulated.

Electrical Impulses can be trapped and re-turned to data for display or storage and every IO device in a computer sends out EI.

Which blows the concept of Air Firewalls out the window, literally, hence the smiley behind my mentioning it in the previous post. I have had Network Engineers make that statement in a room full of people and had to hold myself back from cracking up.

Doomgaze: So you believe that BSD is so high and mighty that it is absolutely secure? BSD is the god of all OSes?

Nope, its not absolutely secure.
The core of it is, but that would be nothing but the core of the system running.

And thats worthless without the software required to do its job.

apache is notorious for exploits
iis is notorious for exploits
sendmail
almost every ftpd
xservers

I don't get that page, Static. What is it?
People who hack into web sites make their report to that web site?

Anyhow, if 85% of the webservers attacks are againsty Linux Webservers, I'd say it's understandable since 85% of the web servers run Linux.

An no, no OS is absolutely secure, just like no house is absolutely secure. On the other hand, some are more secure than others. Fact remains that Linux is more secure than Windows 2000/XP (lets not even mention Windows 9x). Now if the amins neglect to make the necessary updates in order to patch security holes are they are discovered, well then it's the admin that is to blame not the OS. It's like buying the best security system for your house and leaving the windows opened.

Linux is still less exploited then server 2k. That does not make it more secure. paxx to suggest that linux is running on 85% of hosting servers is certainly hyperbole.

Actually 64% of the web is running Apache webserver (roughly)
Which is run on Linux, Unix, Windows, and just about every other platform made.

So no, 85% of web servers do NOT run linux.
