DANG!! These tooltips are driving me crazy!

Wednesday, July 2, 2003 by crissy14 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've tried everything to disable them. I tried modyfying the regisrty as instructed on windows xp help pages, tried unchecking tooltips in the folder options display, tried disabling them in tweak ui for xp and tweaknow powerpack and STILL they keep appearing. Any thoughts ? any ideas?

They talked about it on TechTV a while back... changing the registry shoulda worked. But I dunno if WB screws the tooltips up or not. Did you try checking if the tooltips come up outside of WB?

If you're talking about those annoying Ballon Info popups, I got rid of them with this.

Crissy....is this the registry hack you tried ?

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced]
Value Name: EnableBalloonTips
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Chrissy...do you mean the small pop-up tips when you mouseover a program or do you mean the ballon tips that crop up?

Yeah...that would be one killer script. I hate that stupid thing too...

Tooltip? Like I don't know what I'm looking at by now? Yeah, for advanced users it would be a nice tweak...

I surfed around for awhile and came up with this.......I have not tried this, so try at your own risk............

Q. How do I disable the tooltips in Windows XP and Windows 2000 for the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons?

A. XP and Win2K display a tip when you position the mouse on the Minimize, Maximize, or Close button. To disable this functionality, perform the following steps:

Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.
Double-click UserPreferencesMask.
Modify the first number in the string using the following equivalent values (e.g., change 9e 3e 07 80 to 1e 3e 07 80):
Change 8 to 0
Change 9 to 1
Change a to 2
Change b to 3
Change c to 4
Change d to 5
Change e to 6
Click OK.
Close the registry editor.
Log off, then log on again for the change to take effect.

This will get rid of all.........

To disable ToolTips in Windows XP:

1) Open the Registry Editor
2) Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop.
3) Double-click UserPreferencemask and change its value to 3E 00 00 00.
4) Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows.

And to think that I went to all that trouble to make fake tooltips in my last skin. I didn't realise they were hated so much.

I haven't ever seen the tooltips for the Minimize, Maximize, or Close buttons. But I get them on practically everything else. I hate 'em.
