Hackers planning nationwide attack on thousands of websites July 6th

WASHINGTON — The government and private technology experts warned Wednesday that hackers (search) plan to attack thousands of Web sites (search) Sunday in a loosely coordinated "contest" that could disrupt Internet traffic.
An early-warning network for the technology industry, operating with the Department of Homeland Security, notified companies that it received "credible information" about the planned attacks and already has detected surveillance probes by hackers looking for weaknesses in corporate and government networks.
"We emphasize that all Web site administrators should ensure that their sites are not vulnerable," wrote Peter Allor of Internet Security Systems Inc., the Atlanta-based company that runs the Information Technology Information Sharing and Analysis Center (search).
Separately, the New York Office of Cyber-Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination warned Internet providers and other organizations that the goal of the hackers was to vandalize 6,000 Web sites in six hours.
New York officials urged companies to change default computer passwords, begin monitoring Web site activities more aggressively, remove unnecessary functions from server computers and apply the latest software repairs from vendors such as Microsoft Corp.

I don't know if this is anything since I am a home user, but I have detected a higher rate of probes in the "High Security Risk" mode. Two days ago, I had an attempted hit that came through my ISP. They were called "malformed packets" designed to crash server/networks.
My protection stopped it cold, and I have kept a record of them.

i have been attacked twice in the last month but thanks to my excellent firewall they couldn't get a thing!

I don't know what I can do, my house has all 4 desktop PCs internet through a lan cable modem, unfortunately. allotta pcs, I know

P2P networks are known to introduce some kind of security risk. Your computer is much safer if you stop using P2P, and the only reason most people use them is to get music without paying anyways.

if you are RIAA, I hate you for messing up KaZaA so that my two computers had it mess up but not any of my sibling's computers. why my 2? why not one of the other 4? DIE! I use another one now, but only to preview bands and get non-song clips. (like the simpsons). not
