I just bought me a Dell Laptop. One of the old Pentium 166 mhz with windows 98 models. But The seller included a docking station and more memory and a working battery. It is a Lattitude. I love the little thing!

2 gigs is not really enough for a dual boot system. All I can suggest is to either get a larger hard drive installed or choose only one OS to use. I will warn you though that a full install of Mandrake with all included software packages requires more than 2 gigs so you will have to go through the list of packages and pick and choose the software you feel you must have and watch your disk space.

I have a 6 gig on a old 500 mhz system it has XP right now... would that work? I really want to try this linux thing...

I don't know enough about laptop hardware but I think that laptops do use different hardware than desktops.
Since you will be using Windows 98 and that can run on FAT32 then you can get by with 6 gigs by creating a 3 gig partition C for Windows then created a Linux partition with the other 3 gigs for Mandrake. You should be able to read and write to the Windows partition with Mandrake, but you will have to be careful you don't screw up your Windows installation, that is be careful not to delete any Windows files that Windows needs. You will have to pick and choose your software during Mandrake since everything takes up a litte more than 3 gigs.

the computer with the 6 gigs is a desktop... a old emachines with newer parts added.
I think I will give windows 2 gigs, use 98, and the rest to Linux. It will be a linux machine and maybe I can set it up as a internet hub for my other computers....

Linux is a good way to stop monopolies, macrobloat to be specific. but LinuXP(or whatever windows) is a good dualboot for some people

Very few commercial programs are being made for Linux and many software developers consider Linux to be low priority. On the other hand, there are many good open source programs for Linux that are free alternatives to the most popular commercial apps. For now I use both Linux and Windows for the best of both worlds. Linux Advocates must continue to spread the word about Linux to ensure it becomes as equally popular as Windows so we have the competition that makes capitalism work best.

yeah, but there are some that can play windows games, I think redhat can, but I haven't backed up my xp stuff to partition yet, so I don't know. lindows does though, and probably lycoris. linux users, help me decide: lycoris, debian, or redhat? I'm a new user and just want to see what linux is like so that I can buy a new computer, install linux, and understand. any other suggestions are welcome too.
