I switched...

Friday, October 5, 2018 by VampireFox2 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

So I made a huge decision. I switched over to Linux. Yes I ditched Windows. After almost loosing all of my data trying to update to the October 2018 update and the overwhelming issues I have with Windows in general I went back to good ol Elementary OS. Don't worry I'll still be visiting this site everyday and posting. There's probably a lot of you guys that want to punch me and I'll be watching for your fist to come through my screen   .

Nah, no punches from this end.  I quite like Linux Ubuntu and Mint myself.  It's just that none of my software runs on them without first jumping through a few hoops, otherwise I'd have likely switched a while ago... like when Win 10 became the dominant Windows.

I would be using Linux if I had enough brains to get drivers to work, tried Ubuntu and Mint and could never get wifi drivers to install, that was without an internet connection so now that I have a Ethernet connection it might be different but with the Linux learning curve I am not sure I want to give it another go.

I tried Mint once. No thank you very much. I have enough weird to deal with.

Yeah, I understand that.  Living with you would definitely be weird.  And you can't get away from it.... cos everywhere you go, there you are.

Not to worry, Ross, you're .... um, we're not alone.

A shame you didn't see my post regarding holding off on the update...which wouldn't have started rolling out until 9.10.18, anyway. You chose to update early...the thing about being on the bleeding edge? One bleeds. Sorry about the loss of your data...I'd recommend using Acronis and doing routine system cloning to an external storage device not tied to the internet.

Which is why I didn't go for the fast ring. Slow and easy keeps the weird down to a minimum.

Unless you're too slow to escape the crazy.

You could always do a dual boot and keep windows too.

Always wanted to learn how to use an Apple computer. I know Linux has a learning curve.

Apple and MS are two sides of the same coin. If you want to escape the craziness, you need to go to Linux.

... and this would have been true until a month ago. Unfortunately it seems that SJWs and political correctness (PC) have gotten to Linux too, leading to Linux creator Linus Torvalds stepping away from Linux kernel development and an all out war between the politically correct and the non politically-correct Linux developers, with the latter group now threatening to take their contributed code out of the OS.

Both have a bit of a learning curve after using Windows, but anyone competently using Windows should be able to learn to use either Apple's O-SX or the Linux distros.  Yes, there are differences, but with a bit of persistence and some patience, you eventually learn to competently navigate your way around them as well.

I have O-SX on my MacMini, not that I've used it in a while, but I didn't find it that difficult to use.  The hardest part for me was installing apps that weren't downloaded from the Apple Store.

I've also used Linux Ubuntu and Mint, and yes, there is a learning curve, but there is a help section and an online community that's always willing to help.  In fact, Ubuntu and/or Mint are very likely candidates for me as MS pushes Win 10 to unprecedented levels of control and interference

Users should NOT have to use 3rd party programs to keep Microsoft out and make their PCs their own, but that is how things are nowadays with MS's insatiable quest for power and control.  In the latest major update, MS touts Win 10's new features as being great for the end user, but when you read between the lines, and you should, those new features greatly benefit MS with its data collection and control.  Like there is no way on Earth I am going to use one new feature to connect my Android phone to Win 10 and give MS access to that as well.

Now this is where crazy goes above and beyond.  This is the development of an OS and personal views and opinions should be kept out of it... 100%.  Political correctness has nothing to do with writing code.

On the subject of political correctness, I was once told by an advocate that she firmly believes in the cause because people should not be offended by comments and opinions of certain people and/or groups.  I told her: "Funny, that, you offend me every time you open your mouth."

Let's just say she never lectured me regarding her views again.

I switched to Apple back in 2012 and able to say, I haven't looked back. I do not miss the stress with Windows and glad it is behind me. I don't know much about Linux but played around with it years ago and it worked okay back then, but never continued with it. Not sure why just never bothered with it. I have no gripes with Linux but as I mentioned, don't really know much about it.

Switching is up to anyone and what they think is good for them. As with Apple, Windows, and Linux, each has there pros and cons.

I didn't make a switch, but I did get myself a MacMini around that time [2012 - 2014] I haven't used it a while and I do need to plug it in again, but I did enjoy using it despite a bit of a learning curve.  It wasn't too steep, though.  I can't say that I had any real stress with Windows until Win 10.  There were occasional issues that popped up in XP, Win 7 and 8, but Win 10 is the devil of them all.  I mean, it is usable if MS doesn't mess with it and you use a 3rd party program to block the snooping and etc, but users shouldn't have to go to such extremes to prevent MS viewing and moving personal data.

As for Linux, well I will give Ubuntu a try again fairly soon, but like you, I dropped off and simply discontinued using it, probably because Win 7 at the time was easier to use and accommodated all the software I had purchased.  Again, though, I did enjoy using Ubuntu [and Mint].   They were probably a bit underdeveloped at the time, however, but that was a while ago now.  They would have matured since and are probably more user friendly these days.

OK.

I cleaned out the 2 pages of mess and attempts to edit existing posts.

There is a time limit on editing designed to prevent people from altering history at the expense of others.

If you ever strike an issue with a post kindly pass the problem on to an Admin or Wizop.

Do not repetitiously compound the issue requiring me to waste time when I have FAR MORE IMPORTANT events in my life to deal with - for fear of being IP-banned outright to prevent further attempts/time-wasting.

You have to keep in mind a mac-mini is not an iMac and will not perform like an iMac.

Point is, it gives me the chance to experience O-SX.  I'm not expecting high performance or a high end machine, just something that allows me to delve into O-SX without a premium price.
