Can I use Hubble Images in my Wallapaper?

Saturday, June 7, 2003 by JM_Zen | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I'm assuming that images captured by Hubble are public domain, but I just wanted to make sure.

The fact that you pay tax doesn't mean anything. Assumptions aren't enough either.

If it's in the public domain, I don't see what the problem is. Public domain means that you could use it however you like, right?

ahhh... good ol' JPL (Jet Propulsion Labratory)
JPL is the home of Hubbles images on the net.
their official stand on Hubble images or anyother images they own is.
JPL Image Policy
JPL images are available for use by the public free of charge. However, by electing to download images from this web site the user agrees that Caltech makes no warranties or representations with respect to its ownership of copyrights for the images, does not represent others who may claim to be owners of rights in the images, and makes no warranties as to the quality of the images.

Actually, I disagree. Since I pay taxes and the taxes are used to pay for military bulls*** then every F 16 I see belongs to the American people, or any other thing we funded. that means a small part of every Navy ship is mine to. i worked, taxes were taken, used to pay someone else.

No offense taken.

back to the subject: I think if we in the USA paid for the hubble and the photo it should be OK to use the images.

I could be wrong.

I think your first post was funnier, kona.
Indeed, if paying taxes means it's yours, then indeed, you should go and hop in one of those F-16 and go pilot it wherever you want to.

As a US tax payer, all Hubble images are partly owned by me. I do not mind if people from other nations wish to use images from my telescope as part of their artwork.

Too bad the military sees it slightly different.

And has bigger guns than you

JPL and the Hubble are partially private funded an partially tax funded (more federal than private I'm sure). I'm not sure where to draw the line in that. Best get permission to be safe!

Instead of debating this why not just read the copyright on the Hubble site http://hubblesite.org/copyright/

According to the link, it is okay to use Hubble images as long as you give credit and report your use to them.
