Try this Seddy hold down Windows key and press X ( ignore drop down ) and press U twice quickly .

Edit , ooppps that might not work , but if you get the drop down that might work .

Push and hold the power button for a few seconds. It should force a shut down. Does with mine anyway.

Most computer will force a shutdown holding down the power button.

But Sed , I know because it's a known issue to ME ..  With Windows 10 a Black Screen at Boot Up.

open task manager and sign out and then back in ....( Cntrl-Alt-Delete) 

you might even have to do it a few times till it boots to your desktop .

It's happened to me and still does sometimes.

If you go on youtube you'll see a few reasons why and what a few different people say is the fix.

It appears to be a windows 10 glitch maybe from some a one update maybe, not forsure.

I think Windows has it built into the OS boots for various devices so when windows boots it

thinks it's booting to another device , but sign out and back in will get you to the desktop.

That's what I know ....

Az mine does the same thing at boot up. Black screen and I have to sign out and log back in again. I thought it was just me. Now I know it’s a common thing. 

I tried a couple fixes that showed on youtube Radeon update, Bios Update and Registry edit windows boot .. and still

get the black screen at boot up sometimes not every time . Some times one sign out and sign back goes to desktop

but had to do as many as 5 I think once ....

What's your video card Redeon , Nvidia ?

Has to be an OS thing but why just some and not everyone , other than that I have no problem with Win 10 all

my stuff and Stardock apps working fine .

I’m using Win 10 Pro with Nvidia drivers all up to date. I get a black screen with just a cursor. 

I thought it might be My Radeon drivers actually they needed 4 updates to have the 

latest now up to date and about 5 boots since , no black screen yet.

But you have NVidia and black screens , so who do we blame now ?

Seems to always comeback to Windows . I think I'll start a new Thread about this with 

Black Screen in the title and see how many more have the issue , if we can get enough

on board maybe we can come up with the fix.

I had that issue a few times. I think I posted something about it a while ago. Don't remember the thread. Black screen with only the cursor. CTR-ALT-DEL got me to the pop up to switch, restart or shut down. I did the restart and that worked.

You guys have Nvidia and I have AMD Radeon and we both get a black screen 

so looks like it's not the graphics card.

Sed are you  able to get to task manager in the black screen to sign out and back in

and get to the desktop ?

Sed I added Black Screen at Boot Up to your sub title , maybe get a few more looks

and possible answers.

AMD Radeon in my laptop

Vid #1 gave me a few ideas to start with Mike -- Tech at Nvidia suggested a newr driver a month ago that worked for a while

Apparently it IS win 10 I miss WIN 7 anyway

not sure i understand... you are saying black screen because stuff is being sent to a "wrong" monitor/port but you still get a cursor with that?

i have nvidia. i occasionally get a no signal to monitor thing (it literally goes to sleep... so no cursor there ) when cold booting.. (though i've seen it when waking from sleep once or twice). a forced shutdown and start up fixes that for me. which is probably a different issue to yours. i tend to not shutdown nowadays (and use sleep instead) unless i'm out of the house for prolonged periods... just in case it's something to do with cold boot.

Yea I didn't get that either.

My computer stays on all the time. I see it when I have to do a restart from a Windows update or a program update. I also do a restart once a week just to get a fresh start. I'm also on a dual boot with 8.1 and 10. I might have to sign out 1 or 2 times to get 10 to load. Never had a problem signing into 8.1 only 10.

 It's kind of funny that it seems like we all have the same problem but maybe

a few different versions of the problem ..

Now , after getting into this thread i did find updates for my AMD Radeon divers 

in fact 4 each time I did one then it said there was a newer update and did that 4 times

till now fully updated .

Now since then I have done maybe about 10 boots and No Black Screen so far but

we'll see how that goes . A couple times I thought I had the problem fixed then the

black screen returned,

So if it is a Windows things a fix might have to come from them in an update, but why

do some not have the problem.

Maybe it's a combination of a few things causing the problem so that's why some say

they fixed it but even they say this fix might not work for everyone .

** a note I always turn off my PC when done and do fresh boots each time .

So that's different than some of you .

I will be doing something on my PC and listening to the media player at the same time and all of a sudden the screen goes BLACK... The pc is still lit up and playing my music. No cursor, no nothing just BLANK SCREEN. And it stays that way

I always put it to sleep at night when I leave and wake it up in the morning.

Last night I shut it down and I have (so-far) no probs  this morn.

I just went the last 2 days no black screen at boot

but just now when I booted up Black Screen again, 1 sign out and back in booted to desktop.

I only get Black Screen at Boot Up 

Not while i'm on the desktop no black screens , yet anyway ..

Sounds to me it’s your video card or your monitor. Is the inside of your computer clean? Dust can make things run hot. Pop your vid card out and reseat it. Check your monitor and see if it’s running hot.

I’m just throwing out ideas to eliminate hardware problems before you mess with the software problems.
