I don't think so, (but I wish someone would prove me wrong).   ............ I set the mouse over hightlight color to match the background, so it doesn't look odd.

Left Tree; Miscellaneous, Colors......... Right Tree; Menus, Menu-Highlighted text (XP only)

I have seen it done in object bar but i'm not using it . Your method was the best i could come up with too. What a shame tho,...all that work and something very plain cant be changed.

Ok, well I don't get this at all because this skin: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?Library=1&skinid=3312
does have a graphical image on the mouse over for the all programs. It's a red eye. I have also seen another skin which has an image for that mouse over, but I don't remember what it is. Apparently this is a closely guarded secret

The arrow image itself can be changed on mouse over, but the highlight color behind it cannot be replaced with an image. This can only be done on the bottom bar and the places and programs lists at this point. I typically use Koasati's method.

so that red eye on that skin replaced the arrow image? hmmm...Is that a 'glyph' image? Why couldn't you just make a replacement arrow image which is as big as the mouse over needs to be?
