Cable iz king.For the residential customer it is the winner hands down.Absolutely no competition.

Actually, I had cable. got to expensive. DSL has proved to me better than dial up, but not as expensive as cable. I would love to have my cable back.

I have a cable connection. I love it. Its always on, doesnt tie up the phone. In 3 years the service has went out twice for a about an hour each time and costs me $35.00 a month. Here are the results from bandwithspeedtest.com...

My own ISP offers a SpeedCheck too. They came up with 610kbps, which they say is below their average, so I should stop using my router. Yeah right. If its slow, it doesnt seem like it. Webpages open faster than some files from my harddrive do.
I have seen results as low as 513 and as high as 750.
I think DSL averages about 400kbps but can offer up to 1.5mbps. not sure about that one. T1 should pull 1.b mbps but IS expensive for home users.
I dont know what all these numbers mean for sure, but I do know that I downloaded PSP8 which was 85MB in under 20 minutes
I'll never switch. Ditto what event and brazil said... "bang for the buck" I think cable is the "poo", so catch a wiff

There is only one thing I like about DSL over cable: Dedicated Digital Line. With cable, you have to share the bandwith with everyone. So the more people around you sign up, the slower you go. DSL is a direct link.

I have come a longgggg way from the old 14k dial-up connection. And after trying out some of the other services, I opted to stay with Cable (I wish I could get T3 or OC12 like the company I used to work for 
) DSL and SDSL are good too, but If you live far from the main stream, your speed lowers considerably.
My SpeedCheck has clocked my connection up to 754kbps at times. Thats more than enuff for me

I like my cable connection, but you best have a very good firewall....

JM, you may need to format. Was having the same problem some time ago and it stopped after formatting.
You don't need a T1 for personal use. Cable is as fast, or faster than T1 download speeds (at least with mine, I get 1.5mbps - 3.0mbps). T1 is around 1 - 1.5 mbps dl speed and it's the upload where the T1 is superior (not to mention it's for multiple users) where I believe the upload is the same as the dl speed.

i love the DSL which i just installed when i'm online, but my computer takes noticeably longer to boot up while the connection manager does its PPPoE computation turkey dance. 
i know several cable users in new subscription areas who are thrilled with it, and two more in older, oversubscribed areas who abandoned cable for DSL. pick your poison!

The more people on cable in your area, the slower the speed. DSL stays at the same speed.

however, in my area DSL costs significantly more than cable.
I'd switch in a heartbeat if they made it worthwhile.

Thats right DSL stays the same speed,,,,,SLOW.I have tried them all and for me DSL was the slowest most undependable,hard to install/get ta work connection.I have had cable in the most active area in my city and have never noticed any kind of slowdown.Day or night.When I had DSL it would unsynch at least once a day until a reset was done on the whole network.Cable smokes DSL no matter how you look at it.

And a T3 smokes Cable. My local libary has a T3 and it is pulling in close to 1 gbps (yes, gigabit) according to them.

Only SDSL (Synchronize Digital Subscriber Line) has the same file transfer speed on upload/download and it gives you a choice of speeds ranging from 144 Kbps to 1.5Mbps. (wich never goes up to that speed)
I just ran a test on my connection, this is the resul.
Your Connection Loaded 322,649 bytes in 2.944 seconds.
Your throughput is 877 Kbps.

My DSL is 1196 Kb/s down 110 Kb/s up (ADSL). Not as good as cable but plenty fast. Of course not every is lucky like me, I live about two blocks from the relay so my DSL screams.

I live in a rural area about 2-3mi from the relay so Ill get about 590 kilobits/sec. Not blazing fast, but it gets the job done a lot quicker that my old 36k modem. Here you'll pay $50 a month for ADSL or $20 a month for dial-up. Cable isnt avalible here.
