Skinning - an Extinction Level Event
Saturday, November 25, 2017 by Fuzzy Logic | Discussion: Skinning
Yesterday I decided to treat myself to the new version of Office. Having used a corporate version of Office 2010 for the last few years I quite fancied my own copy - Office Pro 2016.
To go with this, I did a clean install of Windows 10. I have installed all the other programs I need, and, omitted games I no longer play. Everything is now squeaky clean.
I have not installed any skinning programs - at all. I no longer see what I need them for. Windows is perfectly adequate for the task.
So, is that it? Has skinning become obsolete and gone the way of the dinosaur? Only time will tell.
I do like the nice clean look of my pc though

You see no need for it that is fine to each their own. The real thing that has slowed it down is the use of Cell phones, Tablets and other devices. The new generation doesn't even know what Computers are and many of the older computer generation has passed on. So some day it will be gone as people like me pass on there is no one to replace as.
It's like me asking people that are only 40 years old if they ever used a Commedore 64 computer. I did but most never heard of it.
If someone that use to use SD products to customize their computer no longer has an interest so be it. WindowBlind, Start 10 along with oldnewexplorer can make win10 look just like win 7. But if no one even like that look and like win 10 no need for the products. It's not done yet.

Firefox 57 also does not skin properly unfortunately.
Click the three bars top right and select customize then on the bottom left of the screen put a check mark in Title bar it will then skin ok does for me

I kind of like the Win10 look, I use it as a "theme" sometimes. I get tired of any look though and I really like to be able to change it, and that's WB.

Well heck, that works; thanks!

I am not using skins as much as I used to, but then I've had a fair bit on my mind, things to do, and I've not really thought about it that much. However, thinking about it, I do have some fave skins that I miss seeing, so maybe I'll reinstall WB and dress up my desktop again.

For you, it seems so, at least for now. That may change?
I've been working on my current blind for a lot more time than I usually put into them. Kind of losing interest or out of ideas, not sure which.
Also seems that site traffic appears down. Forum posts are down, downloads appear to be down.
Win7 still has 48% of the market share, so I do figure that what I make is still usable for some.

Skinning bug seems to have gone on vacation from me too. However I am in the process of making it an offer it can't refuse.

Will never stop using WB, IP, Start10, and WinStep. Ever.
As for making my own.... eh... WBs look beyond my skill set. I will, however, skin WS, NS and etc when/if the skin builder is remade.

Hah! The human race itself is an extinction level event, so I'll just keep on skinning.

Amen.
There no doubt isn't as many people downloading. However there are still many that love the skins so I'm still it.
Last, I have seen a big fall off but the last couple years it has been pretty steady. More than enough to keep skinning windowBlinds. I think many of the other programs like music programs or whatever may not skin correctly for win10 as they have not been updated. Stardock can't control that.

I'm going to start my first skin, I'm still doing research. I hope the site is still here when I finish.

I started using WindowBlinds on XP and I still enjoy changing skins on Windows 10. In fact for me the Windows 10 look is a step backwards compared to Windows 7 Aero Glass, so I hope WindowBlinds will continue to work going forward. I just wish it was possible to skin Microsoft Office 20XX applications as they look very plain. Firefox 57 also does not skin properly unfortunately.
