Notebook Crashed!!!

Yesterday I downloaded a cursor, the nickname of the person that made the cursor was "Niker" or something like that. Well I opened the folder and it started to open it and my notebook stopped working. I had to turn it off and when it started again nothing worked. The only thing that moves or works is the cursor which returned to the original white plain cursor. I cannot get into anything. I was thinking about using the system recovery discs but I don't know if that will work. I can't lose anything because I have important documents. Any help or suggestions will be very helpful. If you hold down the window button and tap E you will get into your C drive. (on a computer). Try going in that way and UNLOADING cursor XP, then reload a different cursor. Then make sure to delete the cursor you had the problem with.

Umm...well I tried what you suggested but it will not do anything. Like I said before the computer does respond to anything. Anything else you can think of?

Well, I am not familiar with notebooks at all. I am sure someone with more knowledge will have some answers. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Can you provide more info... what Operating system are you using? do you have administrative rights on the notebook?

Have you tried going into safe mode when the computer starts up? I think pressing the F8 key during startup and before the logon should get you into it. Then you can reset things back to the XP default, uninstall the program, etc.

with XP you have the option of using system restore. You say your mouse works so lets assume you can access your start menu. in the start menu under accessories, system tools select system restore when the program launches select a date and time b4 this occured. If this does not work because you can not access it due to your problems let me know.

You might try rebooting...after Post hit F8 and load last known good config. Not sure what you mean when you say nothing works, but give it a shot.

Static, does system restore restore everything? I've never had occasion to use it so I'm wondering. For example, perhaps not relevant in this case, but if someone was working on something that was saved that day, if the restore point is the day before, then that data would be lost? Just wondering which is preferable depending on circumstances, restore or using safe mode (if the person can get into safe mode, that is).

My understanding is that it restores system settings to an earlier configuration and leaves data files that you have produced as they were.

My experience is that sys restore does not affect the My Documents folder so if you created something new it would not change or should you have deleted something old it would still be gone. Sys restore does put back uninstalled progs tho.

Static is correct...it only affects proggies and their confir..

as yrag says. reboot your notebook. after you see the white line start to cross the bottom of the screen as XP begins to initialize tap the F8 key then you will see an option to restore your computer to a previous configuration. You can also boot into safe mode the same route tap F8 then try the interactive approach and use the start menu to start a restore.

Yeah, during the start up process you have to use the up down etc arrows on the keyboad and enter to select. Because your mouse drivers haven't yet been loaded (I figure). That's how one navigates if you get to the restore/safe mode screen.
