Winstep and hurricane IRMA

Thursday, September 7, 2017 by JcRabbit | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Just a small heads up.

Although there is still a lot of uncertainty, it looks like Cat 5 hurricane Irma might be heading towards southern and center Florida.

Winstep is hosted at the Hivelocity data center in Tampa, FL, and while they have really robust facilities (reinforced concrete buildings built to withstand the severest of weather, UPS systems, diesel generators and fuel for several days) and are making preparations for the worst, there is still a possibility that connectivity might be impacted.

So, if Winstep suddenly goes off the grid sometime during the weekend, you already know why. If the worst happens, we have onsite and offsite backups, which should prevent any data loss and help getting Winstep back online ASAP.

For anyone on the path of this catastrophic hurricane, please stay safe.

I know lot's or people down in Florida, some so poor they can't even leave, they have nowhere to go.

Let us pray for everyone affected by these hurricanes, the massive fires in 9 states on the west coast, and also all those around the world being hit by these huge climate change/global warming issues. So many people dying, so many without homes to live in.

I think RnD should whip up a Winstep theme which skins...then suddenly becomes transparent - with a rain and wind effect.    Not really.

On a serious note, thanks for the 'heads up' or, 'Duck!" notice, Jorge.

And for all the folks in the path of this monster... I.D., Lantec (Mike) and others, good thoughts for you all...hope you sustain no damage.

Everyone be safe. I just saw predictions it looks like it's coming up from the bottom to the top and watch out there's another one behind it called Jose-Cat 2.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by both Harvey and Irma. Lets hope Jose has other plans, like staying out to sea.

Move to Australia...we don't get Hurricanes....only Cyclones...

OK, so we have other things that kill....like snakes, spiders and stuff.

Stay safe, everyone...

Lol Jafo...

It now looks like the whole of Florida is going to be affected.  Ouch.

This is perhaps what that article in the Washington Post forewarned in July:

"Tampa Bay's coming storm. The area is due for a major hurricane, and it is not prepared. If a big one scores a direct hit, the damage would likely surpass Katrina.'

In the news said 3 to 5ft tidal surge would cover Miami and they're calling for 8 to 13ft surge.

On a side note an 8.1 earthquake just hit Mexico last night.

Or New Jersey, nothing ever happens here. The weather is boring. A little bit of rain and some snow. At least we get to see the leaves on the trees change.

Quick update: Irma's outer bands are making their way in to Tampa now.

We're still here, of course, but seeing the situation getting progressively worse from Friday onwards in terms of where Irma is heading, we decided to setup a secondary backup server 2,000 miles away from the disaster area. We've been working round-the-clock throughout the weekend to make sure that, if the worst happens, any downtime will be minimized.

Again, to all the people on the path of this hurricane, good luck and stay safe!

Besides hurricanes, there have been many in Florida over the years, 488 have been recorded, rising sea levels will practically wipe out the state. I'm not sure if that 488 figure is accurate or when they started to keep records. Maybe places like that shouldn't be populated? None the less I'm thinking of the people who are suffering there. The people around Houston as well.
