Review of Object Desktop in PC Zone Magazine

Tuesday, April 29, 2003 by grayhaze | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I just bought the June issue of the UK magazine PC Zone for the big preview of Half-Life 2, and happened to notice a mini-review of Object Desktop in an article about making your computer 'cool'.

Quote:

"Products such as Stardock's Object Desktop can be downloaded in a flash, and allow you to tweak and fiddle with the default appearance of Windows by reshaping its look and feel. The vast bulk of replacement frame, images and cursors are garish, blatant copyright theft or just plain awful, but if you couple Object Desktop with Winbar, which gives at-a-glance readouts of Godzilla's vital signs, you'll have something truly awesome."

Then elsewhere:

"Object Desktop - Turns Windows into an unusable, graphically offensive mess. Chalk up some points for being weird."

I'm sure I'm not alone in finding these comments downright offensive. They also lay into CursorXP by basically saying it's totally uncool.

Who knows where these so-called journalists learn to talk about this stuff, but it seems to me that they probably haven't even tried to research for the article. They probably just read an ill-informed comment on a forum somewhere and thought they'd add it to their copy.

If you'd like to give them some feedback on their journalistic integrity, you might like to e-mail their letters page at '[email protected]'.

By the way, if you want to give Winbar a go to improve your horribly disfigured desktop after using Stardock's products, go to http://www.winbar.nl .

that is true Jafo, people will listen to you more when you speak to politely, even if the discussion is about them disrespecting you or not listening to you.

To prevent anyone making fools of themselves when responding to the magazine about the article, I thought it might be a good idea to actually let you people see the article itself. I know this is sort of illegal, and it will probably kill my bandwidth, but here are the scans of the 3 page article itself:

Page 1: http://grayhaze.com/scans/pczonepage1.jpg
Page 2: http://grayhaze.com/scans/pczonepage2.jpg
Page 3: http://grayhaze.com/scans/pczonepage3.jpg

The stuff about Object Desktop and CursorXP is on page 3, and I have highlighted the relevant paragraphs in yellow.

Hopefully you'll be able to take the comments in context now, and understand that this wasn't just an article attacking Stardock, but rather a misguided attempt by a journalist to inform the UK readers how to be 'cool'. Oh dear.

By the way, if the admins here request that I remove the scans, I'll be more than happy to do so.

grayhaze....that lot is entirely tame, apart from the 'blatant copyright theft' bit, which is libelous at best.
As I said earlier...the PC Answers articles are far more disparaging...

Since we [Wincustomize.com] are included in the body content of that article I see no reason to remove it from view....

It doesn't seem that offensive actually, just high in "Attitude".

It's a gamers magazine more than anything. Those sorts of reviewers tend to word things in a way more serious reviewers would not. It's more about comedy than accuracy is my impression.

Oh and religion is people trying to get to God. Christianity is all about God reaching out to people and inviting then to come to him.
