ShellStyles

This has probably been asked amillion times, but I can't seem to find help anywhere: What exactly are shellstyles? Are they shell replacements such as Astonshells? If not, what are they and can I still use my stardock progs to replace my shell or will it always just be an overlay - I have a few things I REALLY want, but am affraid to bug down my system too much. Well, as you can tell, I don't know a lot, but I'd appreciate any help!

The pic at the bottom of the page includes what shellstyles in WB4 skins which weren't skinned in WB 3, including the turn off computer section, for example. http://www.windowblinds.net/screenshots.asp
