The new poll

Tuesday, April 15, 2003 by WOM | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I guess this poll is for the few who don't like windowblinds. As a user who like a variety of blinds there isn't anyway to answer. HUM.

just log out and you´ll see the results.

it´s all a matter of personal taste. two great skins released recently (Rogue, Systronic-15), but if you look at the two current top downloads at the right most WindowBlinds users seem to prefer skins with technically poorer graphics.

i voted option number 2, "visually unattractive", that´s at least true for the huge majority of skins. the reason why not using WindowBlinds is that the program is not useful enough.

moshi....come on....WB is the perfect adjunct to LiteSTEP...and on-top and roll-up controls are definite added functionality...

So number two is for you!

(It rhymes so you know its true.)

Visually poor graphics? How do you know? What gives it away?

I got SETI, Nomad, Passive, Subterfuge, Watercolor, Woody, XP Corona, XP Jeans XP USA, Alias Redux, Ambient II, Blackcomb, Boron, Grayce, Denali, Goof, Generations, Ghost, Hot One, Ketix i think all of those are good skins and some you can actually use at work. (Ghost, Gracye, Alias Redux, Woody, Subterfuge, Ambient II)

I think there are allot of skins that don't have nice bitmaps but I still use cause its still cool.

I just can't go back to regualer windows... I just can't.

it´s a good program. roll-up and on-top are cool, but for my three windows desktops (LS, HoverDesk, BlackBox) it´s not really enough to make me use WindowBlinds.

BlackBox has both functions built in, and even more window managent as "keep sticky on all desktops" and "set transparency".

HoverDesk v3.0 will have roll-up buit in also.

with LS i currently use Freeshade, but i will soon get a new mouse and use the extra buttons with WndMan.dll http://www.loose-screws.com/comment.php?type=mod&id=327 both have more "usefulness".

joe: i said the majority (not all) has unattractive graphics and that it is about personal taste. something with jaggies will never get on my desktop

btw: i don´t use regular windows as well.

would be fair to add that "the majority (not all) has unattractive graphics" fit´s to many skinnable applications.

I think the latest poll is not very well worded. I really love WindowBlinds and i also love all the variety that is shared on this site. The variety of the skins is what makes this place great! If i had wanted a plain, boring utilitarian desktop i would have stuck with good old Microsoft! Keep up the great work everyone!

having misunderstood the question, I answered "They are too complicated." By this I meant that creating a new, full featured WB4 skin, is complicated.

Good thing I resisted. The no gripe came in handy.

moshi...so your plan is to use a series of apps to replace the single functionality provided by WB....assuming you already use styleXP or the re-hashed eFX thingie to skin the windows...

Well, I guess this thread accomplished something. A new choice was added to the poll.

see what happens when you speak up?

things happen, even unseen things happen. just 'keep it real' and you will 'sieze the day'.

Ok 'WOM'?

moshi, does that mean you actually have round windows? I have been working on that for windowblinds and I haven't figured out how I will have the bitmap stretch.

It looks more like an oval.

then what I am also trying to do is when it maximizes the cirlce (oval) disappears so the full screen is used. (one maximize do this)

anyway, I think I'll give up and make something else with a cirlce in it. (and triangles, and trapiziods, and squares... lots of plans.)

too late, I wanted that too
Simple, as a matter of fact, I don't use any windowblind skins from here (or walls, cursors or whatever.)
I might download some awesome skins like copperdeck and alien technologie just as wanna haves
If you don't like the skins, make them your own.
They might never be so good as the 'profesional' skins, but because you made them they look nicer..... or something

jafo: no way i am using StyleXP, i hacked uxtheme.dll myself with a hex editor (VirtualPlastic has the instructions). took about 30 seconds.

series of apps? why should i? if i run HVD or BB as shell this functionality is already there. in LS i have to load a module that takes about zero memory and cpu time.
in *NIX it´s pretty clear that the window manager takes care about this functionality. Windows on the other hand does not have a window manager, so there´s no clear definition which app, the shell or the one that draws window decorations, should handle this, there are even some graphics card drivers that have it included.

btw: different topic, but as this is the site that get´s most hits, how about building up a library with links to skinning resources as Photoshop interface tutorials. i think that will help to lift the technical standard.
