(Solved) WindowBlinds 7.42 didn't break my system
Tuesday, December 20, 2016 by anotherside | Discussion: WindowBlinds
I have been running WB 7.41 for years without problems. Now my desktop is visually broken.
I DID NOT install WB 7.42. I don't want it. Why did it install without asking?
I have saved a copy of 7.41.1 so if you promise to not push updates, I'll be just fine after a reinstall.
I just want to know what's going on, because there is probably no topic more sensitive to me than "forced updates".
It's a concept that doesn't work. We all know that. Especially when updates break stuff (which they tend to do).
Just don't push updates and I will reinstall 7.41.1 and things can be peaceful again.
If there is a setting I have missed to not receive updates please inform me.
If you are not pushing updates, I am sorry for my little rant. WB 7.42 seems to be on my system and it's not working.
Windows says 7.41.1. About WindowBlinds says 7.42.

Could be wrong but I believe I have every version of WB for the last 8 years or so. I have 7.41.1 but don't have a 7.42.
As Jafo said it does and has never forced a download.
Have no idea what you are saying you have Windows 7.41.1 yet Windowblinds about says 7.42.
You can't be on Windows 10 as the version 7.41.1 won't run without many problems. So what version of Windows are you actually on?

Windowblinds isn't a 'forced update'. When a new version is available you'll be notified that 'a new version is available'.
That sounds great to hear. But how did WB 7.42 get installed without me doing anything?
As you are sensitive about 'forced updates' can we therefore presume you are on Windows 10 and are suffering from them with your OS itself?
I am on Windows 7 (without cumulative updates) and as you know WB7 is not for newer versions of Windows. That Stardock is not pushing updates is all I need to know.
WB 8 and 10 have checkboxes to avoid updates. I can't find such an checkbox in WB7. So I thought an update had been pushed on me and the Windows 10 rage started flowing in my veins.
I will wait a day or two to see if Neil has something to say about how version 7.42 ended up on my system. I will go to bed now. I can live with a broken update and a reinstall. It's silent (forced) updates that make me lose it.

My 2 cents..I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 with WindowBlinds_10.5.0 installed and could not be happier.
Just sayin........

I have found out that maybe WB 7.42 didn't break Windows. When I found out I felt embarrassed for making this thread.
For me the bigger issue was not that my screen looked messed up. It was having WB 7.42 which I never installed.
It's also a Windows issue. If something can install silently UAC is not doing its job. In Vista UAC was annoying. In Windows 7 I don't find UAC annoying at all.
I give Firefox permission to update automatically. I wouldn't give WB permission to update automatically because just like Windows updates it affects the system at a lower level.
Unless someone in the know replies to this thread I will never know if WB7 did a silent install or not. There is no checkbox that one can tick to avoid updates. So WB7 didn't break the rules so to speak. I might have to install WB8 or WB10 because I clearly remember a checkbox that disables updates.
I will tell you what happened. Obviously I didn't remember this when starting this thread.
I had patched my system to run a few visual styles. I deleted those styles and started WB. I didn't change anything and WB seemed to run fine. So I quickly forgot that my system was patched.
Later when I changed skins in WB and themes in Windows Control Panel I ran into problems. I saw the number 7.42 in About WindowBlinds and made this thread.
I uninstalled WB and problems still persisted. I remembered I was on a patched system and “unpatched” it. Now everything looks fine. I haven't installed WB yet.
No more drama, at least not right now...

That being the case I for one would be questioning whether it was an OS update that is causing you issues.
