Who Else Doesn't Like The New Look Forums?

Thursday, October 27, 2016 by starkers | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

So who else, as title asks, and it's a simple question, doesn't like the new look forums?

Personally, I don't.

The gaudy blue bar at the head of each section looks like something Microsoft would do.... and this is coming from the leading customisation site?

At least the previous black bars had a bit of class and were stylish, but these blue ones are plain ghastly.

There, I said it!

Each bar should be a different color, like a rainbow.

IMHO, it's crap. Many of us buy Stardock software to eliminate this look on our OS. It's too much  blue, blocky, flat, boring and smells like MS. Mark me down as an unhappy camper. The only good thing about this change is that my new job and its hours keep me from being as active here at WC as I'd like to be so my exposure is limited.

PLUS.........it still doesn't use all my screen real estate. Lose those stupid, outdated waste of space blank areas on the sides already, will ya? For the entire site, not just the forums.  Who runs 1024x768 nowadays anyway?

Right on,Wiz, the Microsoft look - ala Fisher Price - is nauseating at best.  And you're right, we pay good money to Stardock to escape that horrible look, then Stardock goes and plasters it across our forums.  Okay, Wincustomize is their site, I guess, but we the users are the ones whose eyes are hurting from butt ugly MS Blue.

As for the unused space on the sides, I agree that too much screen real estate is being wasted and more could be done to make use of it.... WITHOUT filling it with ads [self-promotional or otherwise], as too many sites do.  Skins of the day, week, most popular of all time is one idea, but why not just expand the content outwards to the edges.

Oh yeah, and congrats on the job.  Hopefully it pays well enough to provide you and yours some quality of life and a decent standard of living.

I actually like it quite well. No complaints here.

You are entitled to your opinion, I guess, just don't ask me to respect your artistic views in the future, okay!  J/K.

I also suppose you're one of those aesthetically challenged people who liked Microsoft killing off Aero for the flat look.

Nah, just kidding.  Like they say, each to his/her own.... not that I'll ever understand it [liking the 'Microsoft look', that is]

Not fechen likely, then the site truly would have the Fisher Price look.

Don't wish to be controversial but, it's always the same few who complain. Maybe you just don't like change?

Right now I have more important things to whinge about

I've got a suggestion for an "unsitely improvement".  Unicorn and Dolphin emoticons.  And some tacks so I can drop a few down on the road and pop those bike tires for Starkers.

After all, "flat" is the new look.

I'll give you "flat"!!!!!   How about I let the air out and deflate those 'man boobs' you're so proud of?

Or I find your fave pron starlet and remove the  silicon?

As for the tacks, that d' only work if rode my bike these days... with worsening arthritis I can barely lift my leg over the other side to operate both pedals... and riding side-saddle ain't an option.

However, I do like the unicorns and dolphins idea.... it'd piss more than just a few people off.

Oh, and artistically speaking, flat is actually the OLD look.... eg; prehistoric cave paintings, pyramid paintings, Ancient Greek and Roman art.

Cave art was spray painted. Romans and Greeks chiseled their's. That's somethin'...right?

Yeah, and how that pisses me off.

There I am, spelling things correctly in English, as it is in the ENGLISH dictionary, and some Yankee spell checker tells me it's fechen wrong.  Like what a fechen nerve.... telling me, an Englishman, I'm wrong.

Like where do the Yanks get off telling me I can't speel? 😊🎃

However, in the better name of valour, I won't harbour any resentment or ill felling.

Now I shall get back to customiSing my desktop.

Ive been working in the website industry for over 5 years now.  And the simple fact is, if a business does not update their website regularly to keep up with the times...they lose business...its really that simple.

Its not about what looks good, its about usability and how easy the visitor can navigate the site.  Your website has 5 seconds to make a first impression and 1 minute to keep the visitor at your site. (easy navigation, can find what they are looking for instantly) If you fail on both the user hits the back button.

Thats why I think the new forum design is a good idea and I like it.

Just to supply a little reasoning behind some of the recent changes...

As many of you know, our forum system is used across around 15 sites; https://forums.galciv3.com , https://forums.starcontrol.com , https://forums.stardock.com , etc. We are looking at adding new engagement features but prior to the latest update it was quite painful as each forum had a lot of specific styling which made any change a pain because then we are stuck testing that change in 15 different versions.

So we did a pass through to combine 99% of the site styles and make sure we didn't have cases where we had gray text on black backgrounds. This will ultimately allow us to add features quicker without the testing headache.

We would love to let the site take up the whole width of your browser and scale to be mobile friendly, this is just a step in that direction.

Good to hear Orcnbeans, and really nice to have communications from someone that actually works at Stardock. It will be nice to see the future changes. Having operated 3 websites in the past myself, I know what a pain things can be. Keep up the good work!

It's nice to know that Stardock has plans to improve its websites... but I still don't like the MS blue.  Sorry!!!!

And, pray tell, where do I find this highly desired 'black theme'???

Cos I'd nigh on walk backwards across the Nullabor in thongs [Aussie for flip flops] to get the classy black theme page back again.
