New menu controls for windows 10 skinning
Wednesday, January 13, 2016 by 2of3 | Discussion: Skinning
It looks like MS has put together another patchwork UI full of inconsistencies. They just can seem to follow their OWN rules when "designing" an OS UI!
Here are a couple of thing I have discovered in the short period I have had access to WB 10 and Sks 10.
1. Right click menus (desktop and taskbar) are now using the skin defined system colors to skin the background rather than the graphic image.
Controls are as follows:
Background = menu
Boarder = button shadow
The text mouseover and separators are still graphic based.
2. Start Panel flyout menus: Same applies for background as above but here the text mouseover is also color defined rather than graphics defined.
Center = Menu highlight
Boarder = Selected item
That's all for now, but I'll update if I discover anything else. Feel free to comment with tip of your own as well!
If anyone is wondering how to change the mouseover image for the task view, taskbar search and notification icon on the taskbar, you need to skin the pinned item. Oddly it's not visible when using category view in Sks.....change to tree view to find it.

Since I'm using Win 7 and do not intend to use 10, do I need to update WB and SKS 10?

Thanks Tim. A separate substyle will be necessary for win 10. That's if the WB is skinned for 7 and 8 also as some of those changes will effect 7 and 8.
Will of course look bit different depending on the OS, but still

Hmmm, I'm actually putting together a skin right now that will be streamlined so suit All 7,8 & 10... I just conform/skin to the new set of "Rules"
Will of course look bit different depending on the OS, but still
For all I know these "rules" could change as WB 10 is finalized (remember we're still using a beta version). It's still possible that Neil will figure out how to "truly skin" these menus in the future. I personally don't intend to update any skins/produce new ones advertising Windows 10 compatibility before WB 10 is out of beta......but that's just me.

As I understand it, Win 10 is/will be in a perpetual state of metamorphosis and, as a 'service', is constantly evolving... meaning it will always be in beta

He said WindowBlinds 10.
Windows 10 is not a constant beta unless you opt-in for the Insider builds. Otherwise, people have the current release versions.

Hi,
will there be a small tutorial and a method to skin with windowblinds7/8 in a way win10 is at least themeable from win7/8 .?

As a general user...no...but if you were a skinner...then yes....
Will you be able to verify the graphics through SKS 10 even though you only have/use win7? In other words, will the skinner be able to tell that the graphics will work on the other platforms?

Quoting myself, I just want to know if there are any disadvantages to upgrading to WB 10 and SKS 10?
NO.
disadvantages? why would you want to put it on your win 7. There will be no advantage as changes were made to it to work on win 10. I still use the older version on my 7 and installed WB 10 on my win 10 Machine. If I didn't have win 10 on another computer I would have no need for it as the previous version for 7 works great.
Could it Bork something on win 7? I don't know.

Center = Menu highlight
Boarder = Selected item
This part no longer seems to apply. Don't know if WB, MS or Start 10 has fixed it.
