Are there many differences between the free and the payed for version?

yes, the free version doesn't open multiple skins at once, doesn't recolor and doesn't maskcreation, widgets, importing features from other skins and preview is poor.

I noticed some options were missing that were being talked about in a tutorial.

Also, the newest release of SkinStudio is a beta so that more than likely won't be available in the free version.
