I have a new, larger, SSD on the way. The old 128Gb SSD just wasn't big enough, I had to store a lot of stuff on another drive.

Once I've got the boot media on a USB I'll be clean installing W10 to the new drive

That's exactly what I did. Clean install on a brand new 256gb SSD on a four year old Toshiba Qosmio X505 i7 18.4 inch gaming laptop rig. A lot said it could not be done at the time but it worked a charm for me. Fully activated and no issues with any hardware or software compatibility. I like 10. Speedier and snappier than 8 and 7. Just waiting for Edge to catch up with the other browsers on the block and I'll be a very happy camper. 

Leo, did you ever upgrade that rig to 10 before the clean install?

Otherwise, it shouldn't have activated, according to MS.

If you have 7 or 8 and you are using the 'free' upgrade version of W10, W10 has to be activated on the machine first before you can do a clean install.

The new drive is a 500Gb SSD. The 128Gb SSD is quite a few years old and was almost top of the range when new. Realistically it was never big enough for my os, programs and documents. I have 110Gb of photos...

Once you start loading FSX up with all the scenery add-ons, that takes a fair bit of space too

No doubt in a few years the 500Gb will be creaking at the seams.

Didn't that change with the recent Win10 update? Thought you could now do a fresh install of Win10 using your Windows 7/8 License key.

yes. as mentioned before (top of this page). threshold 2 allows people to clean install with win 7/8 keys.

... i wonder how that'll go when i try to do a clean install on my new machine (whenever it arrives). might end up having to phone ms or something

If you have a 64 bit OS then downloading both 32 bit and 64 bit, like the dl page suggests, would be a waste. Unles, of course, you have both. One's enough. Lol

RND.........Nope, first time clean install on brand new drive. And yes you are right, according to Microsoft I should have not been able to do that but it did and was it successfully activated. 

system should be arriving today, got question regarding drivers. should i let win 10 find/update drivers or go d/l them myself?

If the drivers are nVidia don't let Win 10 upgrade them. Go to the website and dl the ones you need.

well. i was posting a big wall of text about the new machine and somehow it didn't go through. forgot how to fix it. (allow stardock.net in noscript did the trick)

suffice to say. just did a win10 clean install with win 7 key. painless, aside from choices i made, like doing it offline (just in case ms moans about having a win 7 machine connected to the net and installing a win10 machine with the same key.. just in cases installation goes wonky and i need to use the old machine to look for help) and it not installing network drivers automatically off the win10 disk (eh? why? installed the motherboard network drivers manually after and it was then fairly plain sailing... aside from there being no win10 drivers for the monitor - bdm4065 and installed the win8 ones instead)

oh and i was having so much fun installing hdd to the fractal r5 trays with the wrong screws that are too small to hold the grommet and practically goes right through (sort of knowingly.. because i can't find the right ones until well after and had to redo them all)

Even if it's a pre-built system check the mfr's website for motherboard, sound, network, etc., etc. Make sure the PC/motherboard is at the latest, recommended BIOS version. Then make sure the motherboard has the latest chipset drivers. From there make sure sound, network are all at their latest - from the mfr. Then get the latest video driver from your GPU mfr.

I did an in place upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10.  Latest build is very nice improvement.

Nice to hear. Make sure you have your mfr's latest Win10 drivers. I've heard MS can overwrite them with updates on Win10 sometimes...

They can........but Microsoft gives you a nice little tool to stop that. Click this link and you'll see........

Great tool. I had issues with Windows Updates trying to install an older HP printer driver and then it obviously failed to install and WU kept reminding me everday to install it......but this tool killed it.

Nope, the great unwashed doesn't reside here, I showered this morning and will again this evening.  Oh, and I do not need to fabricate reasons to shun Win 10.  Without too much ado or explanation, I simply don't like it and will trial some Linux distributions on my main rig [when I get around to plugging it in] to pick which distro best suits my needs.

I think the only way to experience 10 is to actually use it. If you don't play with it how will you know. 

Dual boot to try. Don't give up your old OS until you're sure.
