Graphical User Interface. An interface that has pictures as well as words on the screen.Originally invented by Xerox, the idea was expanded and popularized by Apple Computers. With windows, icons, pull-down menus, and the mouse, the graphical user interface is easier to learn and work with.

Microsoft were actually late-starters in the realm of GUIs. Even the good old Amiga managed to get there before Microsoft 'borrowed' a lot of the ideas from everyone else to create Windows.

WYSIWYG = 'What You See Is What You Get'

An acronym coined around the time of the first 'visual' wordprocessors. Before this, you had to use a scripting language similar to HTML to create documents, and only got an idea of what your finished page would look like once you went to print it.

"But for the better? Thats the question, isn't it?"

Given the alternative of the old single console screens? (without mucking things by say, bringing DesqView into it...)

Yeah. Very much so for the better, I think. ^.^

If for no other reason than I can have multiple console windows open at the same time now and watch each of them simultaneously!

I meant the copyright issues kthxbye.

Of course, GUI is anyday preferred, its easier and user friendly. But I wonder if there were as many apps for a free OS like Linux, how many would/ve opted for Windows...

I wasn't talkin bout GUI in general, only Windows...
