how hard is it to up grade from win me to xp pro with out losing my programs 
i need input on this one ..can't back up my stuff my cd burner is broken

hey, I don't know about upgrading, but the way I install a new windows is just install it from doss. Loosing all your data is a problem, but maby you can store it somewhere else.

I am a computer tecnician but I don't know it all... anyways, I have never had a problem with losing data when using the upgrade option with Windows XP. Nice thing about XP is if you don't like it, you can uninstall it to restore ME in the control panel. Make sure all your programs work with XP or it's all for naught. I agree that the best way is a clean install. Saves time.

If you need a burner, depending on your location you can usually pick up a new one for about $40 to $60 dollars. Staples is cheap, frys is better. most of the time it costs more to fix the drive than it does to buy a new one.

If you have the room on your current disk, make a new partition on your drive and copy all your files to the new partition. Then you can format the old partition during a clean xp install.

I did find it is best if you reformat and do a clean install. Maybe a project for the future.
