I need a resident geek or guru.....

Most of my friends consider me a guru or geek because I utilize ObjectDesktop but in fact as with most people I only know enough to realize that I don't know much.
When I try to use Outlook Express I get this message:
Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x8007007E, 126)
I click OK and then the following messages appears:
Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly.
Both messages don't make much sence to me because I have scads of hard drive space and one gigabyte of memory installed with over half of it available to the system.
I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Anyone who has ever tried to contact Microsoft support is probable still waiting if it has been more then a week or so.
I only use Outlook Express for a newsreader because I use Outlook 2002 for my email and when I click on read news in Outlook 2002, it tries to open Outlook Express and the above messages appear again.
I use Windows XP Pro. I have a 700XL Gateway computer with a Pentium 4 installed. I am unable to re-install Outlook Express because when I do I get a message saying that I already have the latest IE6 and Outlook Express installed. (They come as a package).
I tried to replace the MSOE.DLL file by downloading it seperately but I still get the same messages.
I would sure appreciate any guidence that could resolve the problem.

Thanks kthxbye, but the solution on the web page (correct shortcut)doesn't work. You can't even start the program by going into the actual folder and clicking on the Outlook Express.exe file.

HuronJoe the reason Outlook 2002 opens Outlook Express is because OE is the default for Newreader. to change this setting go to Internet Explorer options then choose the Programs tab then under Newsgroups change the default program to Outlook 2002... as for your issues with OE try doing a full uninstall then reinstall it. (after uninstalling it make sure to delete its folder in the Programs directory of C:\)

mmm, it depends...
seems on technet they describe how to fix this, if it happened after updating to SP1, if that is when it went BURP....
at that point you can repaire/reinstall following their directions, and then resintall every single patch you had already installed because it wipes ti all out to take it back to origional state of installation, neat huh?

If you are having problems only with Internet Explorer 6, proceed as follows:
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry
If you are having problems only with Outlook Express 6, proceed as follows:
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA848-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

Static, thanks also. I would rather use Outlook 2002 news reader if available so I will try to set that as the default.

yeah Static is correct with that for sure, XP Outlook rocks and you should utilize all of it for sure. I'd skip messing with OE if there isn't anything you do not want to save as far as usenet messages go and trash it...

Static, tried your suggestion but even if I put Outlook as the News reader default, it still tries to run Outlook Express when I click on news.
