Might try writing in the names of the skins. Not everyone has a high speed connection and looking at 14 skins at 56K or less would be very time consuming!

Oi, makes you wish they'd make an edit post feature.

I really need to put up the specific proposal on skin patching.

But in a nutshell -- without modifying the original skin, others could update the work of previous skin authors and then WindowBlinds would put together the origianl skin and the third party enhancements on the fly.

The only real political issue is in terms of permission and what level of permission is needed (obviously you'd need permission to use someone's images but what about adding a shellstyle to an older skin?).

I agree Frogboy. There are so many great skins out there that are not used anymore because they are not xp or WB4 enhanced. But Skinners would have to comment to gauge a feel for the proposal. Ask DavidK, how would he feel about somebody adding enhancemants to his older(Dare i say great) skins. Heck, ask all the Admins/Moderaters who do WB Skins how they would react. That would be a start.

I would like to add one to the list... it's called WindOS Soft... Awesome skin from a while back, but the author is someone I can't seem to find anymore I liked his work alot... Awesome WMP skin, and Object Bar skin, I never could get to work... but the screen shot was awesome.. much the winxp start menu, a year before anyone knew microsoft was redesigning it nontheless... I used that skin for a while... before I got xp, then used lots of different skins (now I'm stuck on pixos... my fav skin that's out )

hmmm.... thinking...

I've never stopped using some of the older skins just because they don't have all the new enhancements. Some of the really old ones that don't even have the scrollbars skinned I've made updates for myself for my own use.

WB allows you to choose an XP start-panel and taskbar from another skin, which I often do with an old design. Since the new shell enhancements are in a seperate file like the XP stuff could WB add that as an option? Pick the shell style you want from another skin, just like with the XP taskbar.

I'm just doing a skin's shell stuff right now. I don't understand what everything does, I'm just copying the parts from another skin and editing the shellstyles.xps file. Are there any new docs on these new features? I noticed in skin studio you can now have a mouse-over for the tabs.

This idea of third party enhancements has been discussed with the admins. I don't remember if there was a final agreement on anything. I think there were a few misgivings about the idea. I know I would prefer to do the updates myself but I also know I'll probably never get around to doing all of them. I would give permission for them as long as the original skin wasn't being modified and redistributed.

DavidK: WB4 does have an option to allow you to pick a shellstyle from a different skin. Its on the same dialog as the option to pick a taskbar & startpanel from another skin.

Ande: Brad did indeed expose his idea to us about the skin patches idea. In a nutshell, our reaction was like he said: very nice concept, but could cause headaches and problems with permission. Would a permision be needed if a new feature is added to the skins that doesn't use any of the original graphics at all? Most of us thought that if the patch is made to modify a specific skin (adding new features is a modification), then yes permission is needed.

That's where it was left at.

maybe a patch system in windowblinds would be good, with a ticky box thing when you create the skin so the creator could give permissions themselves like for gfx mods etc, so a patch software would only allow specific mods to be made, but then i guess if you realy wanted to mod a skin, you could do it by hand. or even at the lowes level, a preset list of colours that the skin looks good in?

Well paxx, that's what I thought, and you've said it before, that is an awful lot of permissions to obtain.

argh...

It's funny but I just loaded Darkmarble this morning to delete a skin I was running. Needed to load another skin and it was right there in the list. My first thought was I forgot how much I liked that skin. It will definitely get the update. (I like Chrometube too )

Those too... but you know, Ande, for years I was really, really broke and couldn't afford only trials. I kept the memories of DavidK's Humidor in my mind and it was a goal of sorts that one day I could have something like that. Then when I worked my way back, windowblinds was the first thing I gave myself.

It just was a beacon for me.... a promise I gave myself that I would have if I mastered my problems. So it is special to me.

But I agree.... those other ones are a must as well!
