Well... I have sound problems.

I installed XP yesterday. I have no sound coming from it.
I know that several of these themes have sounds.
Here's what i have done so far:
#1 I have reinstalled the sound card drivers.
#2 I downloaded and installed the XP sound drivers.
Some important facts:
#1 I have two Hard drives. ( C:/ ) and ( D:/ )
#2 I have windows 98 SE plus on C-drive
#3 I have Windows XP on D-drive
Is there anyone out here who can help me?
I am using DesktopX themes. I want the winamp and sounds to work.

Sorry I do not use aim... what is your pc? example would be "Dell XPS 450R" etc.

IBM P-3 Processor 800mhz
C-drive = 7.31 gig (6 gig used)
D-drive = 12 gig (1 gig ) used.
256 RAM
uumm.. I cant think of anything else.

While you are in XP right click on the "My Computer" icon and chose properties. From the popup chose the tab that says "Hardware" in the middle of that page you will see a button called "Device Manager" click on it. look at "sound and videogame controllers" and see if there are any errors and what does it say. If you double click the sound card it will give you info.

Then while your still in Device Manager... click on the View menu at the top and chose "Resouces by type" find your sound card... what irq is it assigned and are anyother devices assigned the same irq?

ok.. I have to reboot... I am using 98 right now.. I didnt want to invest toomuch time into XP if it isnt going to work.. brb

ok... better hurry cause its almost my bed time... tell you what I'll give you a few tips here and see if you can run with it. Lets assume that you have a little yellow sign beside your sound card with an ! on it. First thing to do... your XP disk came with a little program that can do a compatibility check, run it and see if it has a problem with your sound card. 2: only do this next step if your comfortable with open heart surgery... One thing that can be a challenge for your Operating System is to manage the resources itself. the problem maybe that you should change the bios setting for this. when your pc is first turned on you have about 5 seconds to enter setup... usually by pressing F2 or Del key... it may say on the screen. Your looking for an option that says plug n play OS ... disable this feature. ( do not touch anything else ) if this option does not exist then don't waste any more time in there. this will allow your bios to manage your IRQ's and it maybe the difference.

Static, might want them to bootup into safe mode and reinstall sound car if it can't be fixed from the User-Administrator account, just a thought.

you should still check for a IRQ conflict... like described above.. also you could delete your card from the Device manager and reboot into safe mode like iPlural suggested. tap F8 while you start up your computer to get the safe mode option... once you reboot reinstall your card drivers... XP does not natively support your sound card from the info that I can find. There are 3rd party drivers out there that are reported to work with xp ... I wonder if the drivers your using were originally for win98? follow this link to more links for XP drivers. http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/companies/442.htm in order to get these driver you have to sign up for a free account with Drivers.com...

I installed the new hard drive about 1 hour before the XP.
I then installed the XP onto the newest Hard drive.
Everything else works perfectly fine. Just no sound.
I also searched the "troubleshooter" for the sound card.
And in the device manager.. there was no yellow background with a ! inside it. It was normal.

This may sound really stupid, (and Too simple) but have you checked to see that your volume control in "control panel\sounds and audio devices" is up to an audible level and not muted? Also, check the volume slider on your media players (winamp, win media player and whatever else you use). I have found that sometimes these sliders affect your volume globally. Or, do you have a volume control on your keyboard that is muted? Good luck
