Wincustomize

Sunday, February 2, 2003 by chickenbow | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Lately it seems like Wincustomize places a higher emphasis on applications associated with Stardock rather than skins (and wallpapers for example) found within Wincustomize's library. Not that it's a bad idea at all--to be sure, both Stardock and this site can benefit with providing a free, large library of skins and walls--good bragging material for their commercial products which support these free skins. Observing this, some of us ask where does Stardock get these skins? Their users, who freely develop skins and themes, which is smart marketing: create products which allow users to continually develop interesting skins to refresh the product's look and style. Given this, the site's VOLENTEER moderators should naturally offer very little moderation, in terms of rejection, for sections like WB as opposed to wallpapers.
I will just end this off saying that, for the sake of consistancy, these VOLENTEER moderators should accept and reject themes and skins for different products indifferently, without bias, whether their criteria may be of quality work or not, not whatever is most convenient.
Naturally, I may very well have misconcieved of the fundamentals of skin/theme/wall submissions, the average numbers of Litestep, Logons, WinMedia submitted to WC may be very low. In a way I'm curious to find out a bit more about WC stats. I should also note that as a user, I appreciate Wincustomize for its content, message boards, and the ability to connect with other users who share my interests.
Anyway, by this time I'm sure i've pissed off a few poeple so of course, let the flaming begin...

Lets say this, this is a skinning site that has wallpapers and other forms of art. The emphasis is on skinning. The wallpaper artists probably out number skinners 10 -1. Walls take less time to make than blinds so there are more of them uploaded than blinds. So you would have a lot more of them being rejected than blinds. I'am tired.

No flaming....[except we are 'volunteers']... Spell checker

All the sections are 'policed' in that we check content for being 'appropriate', 'correct' and 'legitimate property of the uploader'.
Wallpapers suffer greater 'restrictions' in that they are limited in quantity [by imposed 'standards'] so that they do not swamp the other skinning sections.
Wincustomize.com is a skinning/skinners' site, where walls are just one section, and not the prime focus.
There are oodles of wallpaper/art-specific sites on the net and we are not interested in emulating their focus...

Walls = part of computer skinning
skinning = what this sight is
walls = skinning

but

art sometimes= walls

therefore not all art is meant for walls/skinning and some walls arent always art. Thats how i see it.

Find a skin, make ur wall design emulate that skin, thats what ive been doing for a while now

my 2 cents

no offense.. but the wallpapers need to moderated... I believe the wallpaper section for most part exists for the purpose of wallpapers that will go along with other skin suites on this site, however that's not fair to all... so the good wallpapers get to stay on the site, because the funding for this site comes from two places contrbutions, and a grant from stardock, when more users come on the site more bandwidth is taken,(obviously funds are limited; no pop ups whatsoever on this site). the only way to make up for this is to a.) Buy more servers(but remember that takes money) or b.) limit uploads... wincustomize is somewhere in the middle... doing both... as for wallpapers, they arent what the site is about, the site is mainly about skinning apps, and giving skinning apps that don't have any recognition, some recognition, and giving skinners a place to make their home... so wallpapers, aren't a necessity here, some people have actually mentioned, on several occasions, getting rid of the wallpapers section. just my thoughts don't mind them...

Can't really get rid of the Walls. They compliment the skins and your computer.

Wallpapers have *always* been moderated differently than skins. (just read the guidelines). We are a skinning site that has a wallpaper section to compliment the skins. If we did not moderate the wallpaper section, it would be so large that we wouldn't be able to support it. Also note: not all skins hosted here are for Stardock products. All skins are moderated the same. Wallpapers are moderated differently. Frogboys news comment was only about how the wall artists will be responded to (or not) when their wall is rejected. Moderation process remains the same as it has always been.
