has anybody tried to...

Thursday, January 30, 2003 by joetheblow | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Has anyone attempted to make a "skin" for a laptop case or a desktop? I am giving it very serious thought to hand making some designs that a laptop can sit inside of or a casing for a desktop computer that you can remove to place another one at your whim.

I thought I saw that before and it seemed corny but I thought I would give it a shot. I have some friends in plastics and the rest I can do myself (along with pearl Paint art supply store).

Has anyone thought of this? Seen it before? Think it is corny or very unwanted?

DO you mean like a custom 'protective' case? I bought a 100$$ case when I bought my laptop and my laptop was too big for it. Jerks! I love going to a place to buy a puter from people when I know 1,000 time more about puters than they do. DUH!

Anyway, off my tangent.

I still am not EXactly sure what you mean by your thread so I took a stab.

Ugh! Tell me about it Shmoopy! I spent $60 on a nice bag and my stupid Toshiba is too big to fit in there properly.

Fortunately, I was able to figure out how to get it in there - but it's still a little too big. *sighs*

actually custom painted covers would probably sell ok on the net if you could keep the price down...

You might even be able to go to the patten office and get the outer dimensions and size and location of screw bosses so you could make sure they will fit correctly.

kthxbye, my leather case is utterly useless and I was too lazy to return it cuz at the time it was my B-day and that's a major B-day downer to return a b-day gift.

Go to MaximumPC.com. Have many wonderful and strange Case Mods, for laptops I don't know. I know Jafo. Some of us are dummies and don't link out.

Ask Budda

, just kidding. You can find alot under the product that you want to skin. Like the site where you Downloaded it or the help files. Then you can use Google and search for info. I love using Goggle. It comes in handy for alot of things.

What I mean is a cover for a laptop or a new hardware case for a desktop. My idea is that they should be inexpensive and easy to change to your taste when you want to. I thought about the different sizes of laptops and I think having dimentions and ajustable features should not be a problem.

Now desktops are another story. That would be more expiencive if you wanted an excact fit (like a regular case cover). If you don't mind a larger box around your original case with a design on it then no problem.

ohhhh I really like this idea! I am going to have a sit down with my artists frinds. what a cool venture. (until we are bought out by a biigger company and it becomes a evil multi billion dollar company)

i've seen this type of case of which you speak.... it was cheesy thin plastic.... I want to say that ibm had this concept... or maybe tandy... but it didn't work... the laptop kinda snapped into this thing... not sure where I saw it or how it worked... this like 5 years ago... and thought it looked real bad...

Maximuim PC is a little tame as to what I am talking about, although I did see some cool stuff for hard drive covers. I tought there would be more designs.

I do wonder why computer PC companies don't try to design a way to modify the outside of the PC
