Permissions ?

Sunday, January 19, 2003 by gef | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

When someone submits a 'WinStyles' section, are permissions required from the authors of the programs included in this or not.

I don't think so if it's a suite. Could be wrong but all the artists are getting the credit from the downloads. I think it would professional to do so thou.

Angel_Wings agrees with WOM... It's always a polite courtesy to mention authors if you can track 'em down.

By "track 'em down" I mean, if you actually can find out the 'author'

If it's a .xptheme that physically contains themes you do. If it's a .suite file that just lists skins and contains the URLs where the can be downloaded you do not.

However, for the sake of clarity and courtesy, if you're .suite is for a given known suite by an another author (say the Pixtudio suite) and not just a grag bag of different skins, I think it's a good idea to get the author's permission or at least give it a unique name "Bob's Collection of Pixtudio skins")

That way it'll reduce the confusion if say Treetog and Alexandrie release an offcial .suite file for a given theme.

Just my 2 cents

Wouldn't this stop the original authors from seeing how people rate their themes. It seems wrong to take other peoples work and package them together under their own name without even asking permission to do so.

While it is always proper to ask permission to make anything that is not yours. In WinStyles case, if it is a Theme, permission must always be granted, and if it is a Suite, it can be both permission and credit. A matching Suite Should have permission in my book. (Same skins, WinAmp WindowBlinds, SysMetrix...ETC). A Potluck Suite should be okay with credit in the theme description.

dunno, but I bet if you read the FAQ on the site it will cover something about this question. If not I would probably ask Frogboy or Jafo directly.

Also if there is not a Skiniquette or what have you on the site?

Have to look and see, that could also be a good story line for publication in the WinC-News. Then a link on the side bar to it for us newbies

I think if you are uploading anything not yours, you should get permission first. Shouldn't matter if it's a .suite or a theme. There could be any number of reasons why an author wouldn't want his work posted in this way.
